SIZE: 0 - 3 mths

GAUGE: with 5 mm crochet hook 14 hdc blo x 10 rows= 10x10 cm
with 6 mm crochet hook: 1 shell= 2.5 cm, 1 bubble= 3 cm

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 46 cm circumference around the chest; 54 cm circumference at the bottom

SUPPLIES:
- 3 colors of worsted weight yarn: I have used Red Heart Soft Baby Steps - color Strawberry and White and Red Heart Soft Yarn color Toast.

- 5 mm crochet hook

- 6 mm crochet hook

- 5 buttons + 1 heart button

- yarn needle to sew in the ends

- sewing needle and thread to sew the buttons on

- scissors

NOTES:

  • The cardigan is worked top down in rows, turning the piece after each row.
  • Color change: Don't cut yarn when making color changes, carry each yarn not in use from row to row.

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)::
- ch: chain

- back bump behind the starting chain: (see my TUTORIAL) Working into the back bump of the foundation chain will give the edge a nice, finished look.

- sl st: slip stitch

- sc: single crochet

- standing sc: standing single crochet tutorial here

- hdc: half double crochet

- dc: double crochet

- flo: front loop only

- blo: back loop only

- sk: skip

- st: stitch

- sp: space

- V-st: (1 hdc, 1ch, 1 hdc) in same stitch

- shell = (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc) in same stitch

- bubble = (1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc) in same stitch

INSTRUCTIONS:

The Yoke:

worked with hdc stitches front loops and back loops this way: on the right side work into the back loops of stitches (blo), on the wrong side work into the front loop of the stitches (flo).
You can work the yoke in one color, or with stripes as illustrated, changing color at the end of each row.

With yarn color A and hook size 5 mm start with 44 chains.

Row 1: Working into the back bump of the stitches, 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each ch across, change to B color at the end of the row. Ch 1. Turn (43 sts)

Row 2 (flo): Work each st (inclusive the V-st) into the front loops of the stitches from previous round (flo). With B work 1 hdc flo into each of next 5 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 9 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo in each of next 11 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 9 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo into each of next 5 sts (change to C at the last st); ch 1, turn. ( 51 sts)

Row 3 (blo): With C work 1 hdc blo into each of next 6 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc blo in each of next 11 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc blo in each of next 13 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc blo in each of next 11 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc blo into each of next 6 sts (change to A at the last st); ch 1, turn. (59 sts)

Row 4 (flo): With A work 1 hdc flo into each of next 7 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 13 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo in each of next 15 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 13 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo into each of next 7 sts (change to B at the last st); ch 1, turn. (67 sts)

Row 5 (blo): With B work 1 hdc blo into each of next 8 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc blo in each of next 15 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc blo in each of next 17 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc blo in each of next 15 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc blo into each of next 8 sts (change to C at the last st); ch 1, turn. (75 sts)

Row 6 (flo): With C work 1 hdc flo into each of next 9 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 17 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo in each of next 19 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 17 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo into each of next 9 sts (change to A at the last st); ch 1, turn. (83 sts)

Row 7 (blo): With A work 1 hdc blo into each of next 10 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc blo in each of next 19 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc blo in each of next 21 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc blo in each of next 19 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc blo into each of next 10 sts (change to B at the last st); ch 1, turn. (91 sts)

Row 8 (flo): With B work 1 hdc flo into each of next 11 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 21 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo in each of next 23 sts, V-st in next st, 1hdc flo in each of next 21 sts, V- st in next st, 1 hdc flo into each of next 11 sts (change to C at the last st); ch 1, turn. (99 sts)

Row 9 (blo): Separating for sleeves: With C work 1 hdc blo into each of next 13 sts, ch 4 (for underarm), sk 23 sts, 1 hdc blo into each of next 27 sts, ch 4 (underarm), sk 23 sts, 1 hdc blo into each of next 13 sts, ch 1, turn.
You'll have 13 sts left front side, 4 ch left underarm, 27 sts back, 4 ch right underarm, 13 sts right front side = 61 sts total

Body part:

Row 10: (flo) Continue with C, work 1 hdc flo in each st across, inclusive into the ch sts underarm (61 sts)

Row 11: Change to hook size 6 mm! Begin of the Shell pattern: ch1, (1 hdc, 1 dc) into first st, * sk 2sts, work (1sc, 1hdc, 1dc) into next sts *, repeat from * to * 19 times total, sk next 2sts, work 1sc into next last st, turn. (19 shells)

Row 12: ch1, (1 hdc, 1 dc) into first st, * sk (1dc and 1 hdc), work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc) into next sc *, repeat from * to * 19 times total, sk last (1dc, 1 hdc), work 1 sc into 1 ch, turn. (19 shells)

Row 13- 16: Repeat as row 12, changing to color A at the end of row 16.

Begin of bubble pattern:
Row 17: With A, ch1, (1hdc, 1dc) in same st, sk next (1 dc, 1 hdc), work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc) in next sc , *sk next (1 dc, 1 hdc), work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc) in next sc*, repeat from * to * 17 times total, sk next (1 dc, 1 hdc), work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc) in next sc, sk last ( 1dc, 1 hdc), work 1 sc into 1ch. ( 17 bubbles and 2 shells)

Rows 18 - 26: repeat as row 17, changing color after each 2nd row. (Each stripe will be made of 2 rows).
Cut yarn. Weave in the ends.

Button Band:

work on the side edge of the front sides, with hook size 5 mm!
Left front:

Row 1 : Join yarn color B with standing sc into top corner at the neck, work 1 sc evenly across left front edge to bottom corner edge; ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in each st across, ch1, turn.

Row 3: 1 sc in each st across. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Right front with button holes:
Row 1: Join yarn color B with standing sc into bottom corner, sc evenly across right front edge till neck edge (having the same number of sts as for the left side); ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 1 sc into first st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts *, repeat from * to * 4 times, ch 1, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each remaining st; ch 1, turn. (5 button holes made)

Row 3: 1 sc in each sc and ch1 space across. Cut yarn Fasten off.
With sewing needle and sewing thread, sew 5 buttons on the left front side, each button corresponding to the buttonhole on the right front side.

Sleeve edge:

Right sleeve:
Turn the cardigan with the back side facing you. Join yarn with a standing sc into the back side corner stitch of the yoke (at underarm), (sk 2 sts, 1 shell in next st) x 7 times, sk next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st and 1 sc in each remaining sts underarm, join with sl st into first sc. (7 shells)
Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Left sleeve:
Turn the cardigan with the front side facing you. Join yarn with a standing sc into the front side corner stitch of the yoke (at underarm), (sk next 2 sts, work 1 shell into next st) x 7 times, 1 sc into next st and 1 sc in each remaining sts underarm, join with sl st into first sc. (7 shells) Fasten off.

Flower applique:
