Moss Stitch Coasters - Free Crochet Pattern with Tutorial

Woven Stitch / Moss Stitch / Linen Stitch Coasters

Finished Size: unblocked 12. 5 cm x 12.5 cm ( approx.5 inch x 5 inch)

Materials:
- cotton yarn DK weight, 3 skeins, one skein in each color: here color A: white, color B: pink, color C: green
- 4 mm crochet hook
- tapestry needle to sew in the ends
- scissors.

Stitches, Terms (US) and Abbreviations used:
ch: chain

sc: single crochet

ch1sp: chain 1 space

twsc: twisted single crochet – See my Tutorial here for stitch instructions. (Note: If you do not master the twsc you can replace it with crab stitch, aka the reverse single crochet).

sk: skip

Notes:
The woven stitch, aka the moss stitch/ linen stitch is multiple of 2 + 1. Add 1 for the foundation chain, that means that you will start with an even number of chains!

The stitches are worked into the chain 1 spaces of previous row and not into the top loops of the stitches!

Color change: You will change color at the end of each row, alternating the 3 colors, carrying the unworked yarns from row to row. Do not cut the yarns at the end of the rows!!
The color change will be made at the last sc of each row, this way: work the last sc till half, having 2 loops on hook, pick new color yarn and finish the sc with the new color. (See the photo collage below!)

COASTER INSTRUCTIONS:
With a 4 mm crochet hook and yarn color A chain 23.

Row 1: 1sc in 3rd ch from hook, (1ch, sk 1ch, 1sc in next ch) x 10 times, changing color to B at the last sc; continue with B, ch1 and turn.

Row 2: With B sk first sc, *1sc in next ch1sp, 1ch, sk 1sc, repeat from * to end of row, working the last sc into beg ch 1 of previous row and changing to color C; continue with C, ch1 and turn.

Row 3: With C repeat as row 2, changing to color A at the end of the row.

Rows 4 – 22: Repeat as row 2, always alternating the 3 colors.
At the end of row 22 worked with color A, do not change colors anymore and continue with the edging. The piece measures now 10.2 cm x 10.5 cm.

Edging:
The edging will be worked in rounds around the piece, joining with sl st at the end of the round.
The first round of the edging will be worked in moss stitch; in each of the 4 corners you will work (1sc, 1 ch, 1sc) in same stitch. Between corners you should have 10 moss sts on each side.

Round 1: Continue with A, ch1, work 1 sc in same st as the last sc of the last row worked. (half of the corner made). First side of the coaster: Turn the piece to work down the side:
*ch1, sk 1 st, work 1sc around the bar of next st *, repeat from * to * 10 times, then ch 1, sk 1 st, work the corner: (1sc, 1ch, 1sc) into corner st;

See in the picture below how to place the stitches down the side!
