”Let the Sun Shine” Sun Hat
SUPPLIES:
- 3 skeins of worsted weight cotton yarn. I have used Drops Paris Yarn - light turquoise uni colour 02;
(Weight/yardage pro skein: 1.8 oz (50 g) = approx 82 yds (75 m))
- small amount of Drops Paris - white uni colour 16 for the cord
- 3.5 mm crochet hook, for exampleClover Amour Crochet Hook, Size E, 3.5mm
-Yarn Needle
- Scissors
TIPS FOR A STIFFER HAT:
If you would like a firmer sun hat or only a firmer brim, you can use a fabric stiffener, for example Impex HT1600 | Hi Tack Fabric/Textile Stiffener.
You can also work the last round of the brim over a brimlock or hat wire. ( I have not used any.)

Before you make the last bcrdc you’ll have 1 st left in the round. Work the last bcrdc of the round: skip the last st, work 1 dc into the very first st of the round (the st below the beginning ch2), 1 dc back into the sk st going behind the last dc made.
Round 11 (Front Crossed Round): ch2, work 45 fcrdc sts around , sl st to top of first dc.
Note: Use the same technique as for the Back Crossed Round to hide the ch2.

Round 25: ch 2 (will not count as a st), work 72 frcrdc sts around; sl st to top of first dc.
Cut yarn. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
Crochet Cord:
The cord is worked using the Romanian Point Lace Cord.
(Note:As an alternative, you can work a chainless foundation single crochet. It will not look as pretty as the Romanian Point Lace Crochet though.)
Watch the Video Tutorial by Planet June below to learn how to crochet the Romanian Point Lace Cord!
With a 3.5 mm crochet hook and a contrasting color work a cord measuring 58-60 cm. Leave a long end of yarn to sew the cord ends together after inserting it through the sun hat.
Weave the cord through the ch 2 spaces of round 18. Place the hat on your head and adjust the length of the cord to make the hat fit; then sew the ends of the cord together being careful not to twist the cord.
I hope you enjoy this sun hat pattern!

Thank you for the wonderful easy hat patterb and the lesson on making the cord. Love the cord--simple and easy with very good and complete instructions. But I'm over 70 and would like written directions. I can copy instructions if I can find them.
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome! I'm glad that you like the hat. You can find written instructios for the Romania Cord here: https://pattern-paradise.com/2016/06/15/tutorial-romanian-cord/
DeleteRegards,
Kinga
Why do I feel like this is going to be way too big? Does it take a while to start to curve like a hat. I'm on my 4th row of X stitches and the top is still flat. Am I doing something wrong?
ReplyDeleteIt won’t start to curve until the 10th round..when you start doing the 45 stitches fir the remaining rows..before you start the brim
DeleteIt should curve Jenny. What yarn and hook size are you using?
ReplyDeleteIf I need wider perimmer of the had and more shade in the brim how I will and where to add more?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hi, if you mean a wider brim, you can add increase rounds for the brim.
DeleteI don’t understand the frcrdc? On row 21
ReplyDeleteYou will work front crossed double crochet, the same way as in the previous rounds where the stitch was used. Please see stitch description in the pattern.
DeleteHow do I get a written pattern for The let the sun shine sun Hat?
ReplyDeleteUsing a PC, take a look at the sharing buttons below the pattern! If you click on the right green sharing button, you will have more sharing options. Between them is "Print Friendly". Click on that and it will transform the pattern into pdf or you can print it out. If you select the unwanted images/text you can delete them and only print what you need.
DeleteI hope this helps!

That green button takes me to a different site. This has happened to me before. There is no easily identifiable print button. Then if you're so lucky as to find it, it doesn't work.
DeleteCan I use Peaches & Creme cotton yarn ? Do I use 2 strands?
ReplyDeleteHi Marsha! I don't know what yarn weight Peaches & Creme is. Please use a yarn that has the same yarn weight as in the pattern indicated. Check your gauge also for a good fit. I have used 1 strand of yarn.
DeleteMarsha - did you use the peaches and cream yarn? How did it come out?
DeleteMarsha, I suspect your hat may be turning out "big/large" because the Peaches & Creme yarn is thicker than the DROPS Paris cotton yarn. There are many weights and diameters of cotton yarns. I hope you had success with your hat! Cheers!
DeleteCan I use Peaches& Creme cotton yarn? Also would I need to use 2 srtands of yarn?
ReplyDeleteDid you use Peaches and Cream yarn? How did it come out?
DeleteHi! What diameter should the piece be when you finish row 9? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi, it should have 17 cm diameter.
DeleteWhy is this hat coming out so big?
ReplyDeleteIt should come out just right, if you are meeting the gauge (using the hook size and yarn weight indicated) and if you follow exactly the the instructions.
DeleteDo you have a video tutorial on how to make the whole hat? I’m new to crochet and I’m having trouble with the written instructions.
ReplyDeleteHi, sorry, there's no video tutorial yet. Maybe in the future. :)
DeleteHi, I don't have a video for this pattern. Maybe in the next future. :)
DeleteVideo tutorial would be awesome to follow
ReplyDeleteI have also had trouble with the sizing of this hat. I’ve used the same yarn and sized hook and I am a very tight crocheter yet it’s come out massive! I unpicked it and reduced the crown size by one round and made the rim using a 3mm hook, but it’s still nothing like the picture. It’s still too big??? I’m really confused.
ReplyDeleteHi, are you using the half double crochet stitch for the crown of the hat, right? Not by mistake the double crochet. If you are using dc, that might be the problem.
DeleteHi, are you sure that you are using the right stitches for the crown? Half double crochet. I think you are using dc, that's why it could end up bigger.
ReplyDeleteBonjour, à partir du rang 3 vous parler de dm....c’est quoi dm ?? Est ce juste une erreur de frappe ?
ReplyDeleteMerci pour votre réponse
I am having troubke figuring out the csdc even afyer watching the video. Is there a substitute stitch I can usem
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely hat. I really like how it works up, however it is so small it looks like a tight bucket hat on me.
