How to crochet the star stitch in the round
To work the star stitch in the round, you will need a base of even stitches!
That means the Multiple for the star stitch in the round is 2!
For this example I have started with a row of 40 foundation single crochet sts, that I have joined with slip stitch into round.
Than I have started working in joined rounds!
INSTRUCTIONS
Round 1 (star stitch round): work 20 star stitches as written in the star stitch description below:
First star stitch:
- ch 3, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into first st, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into 2nd st, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into 3rd st, pull up a loop;
- having 6 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook;
- ch1 to close the star stitch.
The next star stitches:
- Insert hook into ch 1 on top of start stitch just made, pull up a loop;
- insert hook under the 2 bars of last spike of the star just made, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into same stitch where last loop of previous star was made, pull up a loop;
- (insert hook into next st, pull up a loop) x 2 times
- having 6 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook;
- ch1 to close the star stitch.
Last star stitch of the round:
At the end of the round you should have 1 st left! Work last star stitch this way:
- Insert hook into ch 1 on top of last start stitch made, pull up a loop;
- insert hook under the 2 bars of last spike of the star just made, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into same stitch where last loop of previous star was made, pull up a loop;
- insert hook into last st left at the end of the round, pull up a loop,
- insert hook at the base of first star st at the beg of round (just below ch3 of first star stitch)
- having 6 loops on hook, yo and pull through all 6 loops on hook;
- ch1 to close the star stitch.
Join with sl st to top of first star stitch (20 stars total)
Round 2: slst to ch1sp of first star, ch 1, work 2 hdc in same ch1sp, 2hdc into ch1sp of each star around; sl st to top of first hdc. (40 hdc sts)
Note: You will need 2 rounds/rows to complete full stars: one round/row of star stitches and one round/row of hdc sts.
Alternate rows 1 and 2 until the desired length.
How to Change Colors:
You can change colors after finishing a full star stitch, at the end of row 2 repeat (half double crochet row) when slip stitch-ing into round.
With a loop of the "old" yarn on the hook, insert hook into top of the first hdc of the round.
Pick new color yarn and slip stitch with the new color yarn to join into round.
Continue next 2 rows (or as many pairs of repeat rows you wish) with the new color.
