Free Crochet Pattern: "Join As You Go" (JAYG) C2C Deer Block | The 2.nd C2C Animal Block of the "JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL"

Welcome to the 2nd animal block of our "Join As You Go (JAYG) C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL"!

We have startet the blanket in the right bottom corner with the first animal block/square, the Rabbit C2C Square.

Now using the Join As you Go C2C Method (JAYG) we are continuing with the second animal block, the Deer C2C Square!

Joining As You Go (JAYG) the first two c2c crochet animal blocks (Deer and Rabbit) of the JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL

This free C2C JAYG Deer Block crochet pattern includes detailed instructions regarding the JAYG Method, a Video Tutorial, written row by row instructions for color counts, telling you how many c2c box stitches to make of each color and in what order.
A link to download the free Deer Picture Graph can be found below the written instruction!

GAUGE:

6 C2C tiles = 10 x 10 cm (4 inches x 4 inches)

SIZE:

the square is 25 tiles x 25 tiles and approx. measures approx. 15.5 inches X 15.5 inches (39 cm x 39 cm)

SUPPLIES:

For the background color you can either use one single color for the entire blanket (for all jayg animal blocks), or you can use two (or more) different colors.
I have crocheted both options, as you will see in the pictures below!

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:

(I'm using US TERMS in all my patterns!)
- ch : chain
- hdc: half double crochet
- c2c: corner to corner crochet
- slst : slip stitch
- ch2sp: chain two space

CROCHET METHOD C2C WITH THE HALF DOUBLE CROCHET AND JOIN AS YOU GO METHOD (JAYG C2C SQUARES) :

  • You will use the C2C with the hdc, working the square on the diagonal starting from bottom right corner to top left.
  • Each box stitch/block is made of ch2 and 3 hdc.
  • While the increases at the end of the rows where the pieces are not connected are made as usual (with ch5, hdc into the 3rd, 4th and 5th ch from hook),
the increases at the other end of rows will be made with the JAYG Method into the left side of the first animal block, explained in the pattern below.

If you are new to c2c crochet, you can watch my YouTube Video Tutorial featuring the previous version of my Rabbit C2C Square!

We are building the 2nd. animal block into the left side of the first animal block, starting the join into the left bottom corner of the Rabbit Square.

If you take a look at the c2c stitch pattern on the horizontal, you have a block st where the 3 hdc sts are standing vertical with the top of the sts up, followed by a block st where the 3 hdc sts are laying on the horizontal with the top of the sts to the left.
You will always alternate a vertical block st with a horizontal block st!! For the entire blanket!

crochet c2c stitch horizontal and vertical c2c blocks

Now look at the corner stitches of the first animal square! All 4 corners are made of vertical c2c sts with the 3 hdc sts standing up.

To continue with the alternating pattern, the second animal square will need to start with a horizontal c2c st and it will have in all 4 corners horizontal c2c sts.

NOTES:

1. When crocheting on the Wrong Side (WS) of work place the yarns to the front of the work!

2. When crocheting on the Right Side (RS) you will place the yarns to the back of the work!

3. For the JAYG Method you will read the Graph in a certain way for the even numbered animal blocks and the opposed way for the uneven numbered animal blocks!

For Even Numbered Animal Blocks: the 2nd, 4.th, 6.th, 8th. animal graphs (with horizontal corners) you will read the graph this way:

  • ↙Uneven rows will be on the right side of work from from top to bottom ↙ (horizontal box sts!)
  • ↗Even rows will be worked on the wrong side of work from bottom to top ↗. (vertical box sts!)

The direction of work for each animal block will be from bottom right to top left!

Starting 2nd animal block with the JOIN AS YOU GO (JAYG) C2C METHOD

You will use the JAYG Method as written bellow AND at the same time you will follow the Written Row by Row Color Counts below (or the downloadable Graph)!!
The first color changes are made only in row 13. So you will work in main color the first 12 rows witht the JAYG Method!

When using one color only for the background, here is how the piece looks like after finishing row 12 of the Jayg Deer Block!
Crochet C2C Joining As You Go (JAYG) the second animal block of the JAYG C2C Forest Animal Blanket CAL
(In my picture and video tutorial I will use a different colors for the background, so you can better see the joining!)

Row 1 of the 2nd animal block (see the photo collage below!):
Holding the first animal block on Right Side, turn it clockwise 90° (picture 1);
join background color yarn with slst in between the last 2 box sts at the bottom of left side of the 1st animal block (picture 2);
ch2 (picture 3);
work 3 hdc into the ch2 sp of last box st (corner box st). (picture 4)
You just made one horizontal box st on the right side of work!

How to start the second c2c animal block with the C2C Join As You Go (JAYG) Method

Row 2 (see the photo collage below!):
first box st = Increase on bottom side, as usual: ch 5 (picture 1),
hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each of next 2 ch (picture 2),
turn to work on the wrong side (picture 3):
the 2nd box st (picture 4): slst into ch2 at left of 1st box st, work 3 hdc into same ch2 sp
now join as you go (JAYG) to the Left Side of the first animal block (picture 5): slst in between the 2nd and 3rd box st on the left side of the Rabbit (first animal block) .

Row 3 (see the photo collage below!):
Increase with the JAYG Method on the side of first animal: ch2, (picture 1)
slst in between the next 2 box sts on the side of 1st animal, (picture 2)
ch2 and Turn (picture 3)!
First box st: work 3 hdc into ch2 sp just made on the side of 1st animal block; (picture 4)
continue working the next 2 box sts of row 3 as usual: slst in ch2-sp of next box st, work 3 hdc in same ch2-sp. (picture 5)

How to crochet increase c2c with the C2C Join As You Go (JAYG) Method, row 3

Continue increasing from row 4 to row 24 in the same manner as for Rows 2 and 3; increasing on bottom side as usual and increasing on the side of first animal with the JAYG Method as written above; at the same time following the chart or written row by row color counts!

At the end of row 24, worked from bottom to top on wrong side, ch2, join with slst in between the last 2 blocks sts on side of first animal block, ch2 and slst into the first hdc of the corner box st on the side of first animaL, ch2 and turn! (You have 24 block sts total).

Start row 25 on right side with 3 hdc into first ch2 on side, then continue to work the row according to the graph (or written row by row color counts).

The Corner Row, Row 25, right in the middle of the 2nd animal block will be the last row that will join the 2 animal blocks, as seen in the picture below!

Crochet Joining As You Go (JAYG) the Deer C2C Square to the Rabbit C2C, increase rows

From there you will start DECREASING on both ends as usual!
