Crochet edgings through fabric -  A free edging pattern, a review and a giveaway of the Sharp Crochet Hook and the Crochet Pattern Book

I have always admired fabric garments embellished with crochet edgings and inserts, but I haven't ventured myself to give it a try, because I don't have a sewing machine and I don't like to sew by the hand.

Usually you have to make a base of hand stitch blanket stitch around the edge of the piece or you need to poke holes in the fabric before crocheting the edging.

This is way I was very happy, when Jessica of The Sharp Crochet Hook contacted me and asked me to make a review of her hook and a giveaway of the Sharp Crochet Hook and Pattern book.

The Sharp Crochet Hook has a sharp tip, so you can crochet directly through most of fabrics, without having to poke holes before you start to crochet.
You can use it to crochet edgings through fabric for baby blankets, pillowcases, skirt hems, aprons, towels, socks, gloves, etc.

The 15 patterns in the Pattern Book are all lovely!

I have used the Sharp Crochet Hook to embellish my daughter's little dress with a crocheted edging I designed.

Materials used:
- sharp crochet hook
- 1.5 mm crochet hook
- crochet thread nr.8 in 2 colors: white and orange (a finner thread will work better)

Stitches, US Terms and abbreviations used:
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
dc: double crochet
sk: skip
st: stitch
sl st: slip stitch

Edging Pattern:

Round 1: With the Sharp crochet hook and white thread, sc directly through fabric every 0,5 cm. (Make the stitches a little loosely.) Adjust spacing to make a total number of stitches multiple of 4. Slip stitch into first sc.

Round 2: Switch to 1,5 mm crochet hook. Chain 1, 1sc in same st, 5ch, sk 2 stitches, 1sc in next st, *1sc in next st, 5ch, sk 2 stitches, 1sc in next st*, repeat from * to * around. Sl st into first sc of the round.

Round 3: (4sc, 5ch, 4sc) in each arch of 5ch of the previous round, sl st into first sc of the round. Cut thread. Fasten off.

Round 4: Attach orange thread in an arch of 5ch of the previous round and chain 3(count as the first dc of the round),
(3dc, 3ch, 4dc) in same arch, make 1sc between next 2 sc of the round 2 (between and under the sc arches of round 3, See picture bellow!)
* (4dc,3ch, 4dc) in next arch of chains of the previous round, 1 sc between next 2sc of the round 2*.

Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in the top of the ch3 at beginning of the round.

This is where you'll make the 1sc between next 2 sc of the round 2

I have also used the Scarp Crochet Hook to repair an old baby fleece blanket, not something fancy, just sc crochet stitches with 2 chains in between.

   

Conclusions regarding the sharp crochet hook:
It was easier to crochet through the blanket as through the dress, because by the dress i had to pierce through the double layers of the fabric edge, using some force.

I missed the plastic grip on the hook, in Germany all the crochet hooks have plastic grips, but I saw that in US many hooks are sold without grips.
