Front Post Double Crochet Decrease, Back Post Double Crochet Decrease and Combined Decreases

This tutorial will show you how to decrease the ribbing stitches front post double crochet, back post double crochet and also a combined decrease of the front and back post double crochet stitches.

Front Post Double Crochet Decrease, Back Post Double Crochet Decrease and Combined Decreases

Stitches, Terms (US) and Abbreviation used in this tutorial:

fpdc: front post double crochet

bpdc: back post double crochet

fpdc dec: front post double crochet decrease

bpdc dec: back post double crochet decrease

yo: yarn over

st: stitch

Front Post Double Crochet Decrease, Back Post Double Crochet Decrease and Combined Decreases

1) Front post double crochet decrease:
 (See photo collage below!)
yo, insert the hook from the front to the back around the post of the first st,
yo, pull a loop through; you have now 3 loops on hook;
yo, pull through first 2 loops on hook; you have now 2 loops on hook;
leaving the 2 loops on the hook, yo, insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the next st,
yo and pull a loop through; you have now 4 loops on hook;
yo, pull through first 2 loops on hook; you have now 3 loops on hook;
yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

2) Back post double crochet decrease

You'll make the same steps as for the fpdc dec, the only difference is that you will insert the hook from back to front around the post of the stitches!

Bpdc dec:
yo, insert the hook from the back to the front around the post of the first st;
yo, pull a loop through; you have now 3 loops on hook;
yo, pull through first 2 loops on hook; you have now 2 loops on hook;
leaving the 2 loops on hook, yo, insert hook from the back to the front around the post of the next st,
yo and pull a loop through; you have now 4 loops on hook;
yo, pull through the first 2 loops on hook; you have now 3 loops on hook;
yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

3) Combined decrease 1 fpdc with 1 bpdc

This is a combined decrease of front post and back post stitches:
yo, insert the hook from the front to the back around the post of first stitch
yo, pull  loop through; you have now 3 loops on hook;
yo, pull through first 2 loops on hook; you have now 2 loops on hook;
leaving the 2 loops on the hook, yo, insert hook from the back to the front around the post of the next st,
yo and pull a loop through; you have now 4 loops on hook;
yo, pull through the first 2 loops on hook; you have now 3 loops on hook;
yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

4)  Combined decrease 1 bpdc with 1 fpdc 
Make the same steps as for the other combined decrease, just start with the back post, than the front post double crochet.

I have used this kind of decreases in my pattern Swirling Ribs Crochet Hat, worked from the bottom up and decreased at the the top.

  1. How about a tutorial for combined fphdc and bphdc used just like above for ribbing but instead of front and back post double crochet it's front and back post half double crochet. I've been searching Google, YouTube, facebook, and asking in groups for almost a month now and can't find how to do it. All I find is decreases for just fphdc or just bphdc or combined f&bpdc. nothing for f&bphdc.
