If you have never crocheted cables before, you will surelly appreciate the detailed cable tutorial! The cables are pretty easy to do, once you get the hang of them!

SIZE: The pattern is written in adult women size, but you can adjust for smaller sizes by making fewer rows of cables. It depends also of the elasticity of the elastic band you'll use. Measure the headband length as you go, for a perfect fit.

SUPPLIES:
- Red Heart Shimmer yarn, approx. 50 g
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- 4 mm crochet hook
- 1 elastic band
- tapestry needle
- scissors

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- fpdc: front post double crochet
- bpdc: back post double crochet
- fptr: front post triple crochet
- sk:skip
- st: stitch
- yo: yarn over

- dc inc: double crochet increase: a) at the beginning of the rows= ch3 (count as the first dc) and 1dc into same st;
b) at the end of the rows: work 2 dc into same st.

- dec dc: double crochet decrease: a) at the beginning of the rows: start the decrease rows with ch 2 that does not count as a stitch and work the decrease over very first st and the second st;
b) at the end of the rows: decrease the last 2 stitches, working them together.

- ssc: Standing Single Crochet = wrap yarn around hook ones; while holding the yarn tail with the other hand, insert hook in the stitch indicated in the pattern, yo, pull up a loop, yo over and pull through both loops on hook.

- csdc = Chainless Starting Double Crochet - see the Video Tutorial by Moogly

NOTES:

  • Because the cable rows are much more narrow as the rows worked only with dc stitches it is important to use 2 different hook sizes, a smaller hook size for the simple dc rows and a larger hook size for the cable rows!
  • At the beginning of the rows with increases Ihave used the Chainless Starting Double Crochet stitch. If you don't master the standing double crochet, you can replace it with ch3, but you will have small holes in your work.
  • In the rows with cables, the rows will start with ch 2 that will be counted as a hdc stitch and the rows will end with a hdc made into the top of ch2.
  • The decrease rows will start with ch2, that will not be counted as a stitch and you'll decrease the very first stitch and the second stitch.

Don't worry if the sides of the headband start curling, after wearing the headband stretched on the head, it will look good!

Row 37: ch 2 (does not count as st), 1 dec dc, 1 dc into each of next 12 sts, 1 dec dc ; turn. (14 sts)

Row 38: ch 2, 1 dec dc, 1 dc into each of next 10 sts, 1 dec dc; turn. (12 sts)

Row 41: ch 2, 1 dec dc, 1 dc into each of next 4 sts, 1 dec dc; turn. (6 sts)

Casting again on the elastic band:
Fold the headband in half. Turn the headband with the elastic in front of you.
Ch1, work around the elastic band 1 sc into each of the 6 dc of previous row.
Spin the edges of the stitches to the inside, for a nice, finished look. Secure by sewing the last row with the previous row. (You can see these steps also in the tutorial Thread Headband)

Joining the center of the elastic band:
Right in the center of the elastic band, make 1 standing single crochet around both sides of the elastic band and than 5 sc more around both sides. Cut yarn. Fasten off. Hide the edges of the stitches to the inside. Sew the yarn tails.
