Iris Top - Size 3-5 Years - Free Crochet Pattern

This cute little top is fun and easy to crochet. I have worked it using a self stripping yarn, but I can image it in various combinations, for example the yoke made in a solid color and the body in various colors; the sky is the limit.

This top/ vest it is worked with a fine acrylic yarn that has the sheen and feel of mercerized cotton, it is machine washable and dryable.

Size: 3-5 years little girls

GAUGE: with 3.5 mm crochet hook:
in the simple hdc rows: 19 hdc x 15 rows= 10x10 cm
small shell pattern: 1 pattern repeat=3.11 cm

Finished measurements: chest: 62 cm, armhole depth 14,5 cm, total length (from the highest point of the yoke) 43 cm

SUPPLIES:
-3 skeins of Deborah Norville Serenity Garden yarn, color Mountain Heather (yarn weight: fine 2).

- 3,5 mm crochet hook

- 3 buttons

- tapestry needle to sew in the ends

- sewing needle and thread to sew the buttons on

- scissors



NOTES:
The top is crocheted top down, beginning at the middle front. The split should be mid front.
The yoke is worked in rows, turning the piece after each row.
The body part is worked in rounds.

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS /US TERMS):

- ch: chain

- back bump behind the starting chain: (see my TUTORIAL)

Working into the back bump of the foundation chain will give the edge a nice, finished look.

- sl st: slip stitch

- sc: single crochet

- hdc: half double crochet

- dc: double crochet

- sk:skip

- st: stitch

- dec: decrease= 2 stitches worked together

- V stitch: (1hdc, 1ch, 1hdc) into same stitch

- ch1sp: chain 1 space

- small shell of 3 dc: (1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in same stitch

- big shell of 5dc: (1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in same stitch

- top of the shell = the middle dc of the shell stitch (the second dc for the small shell; the 3rd dc for the big shell)

INSTRUCTIONS:

The Yoke

Start with 83 chain stitches worked with relaxed tension.

Row 1: Working into the back bumps behind the chain, make 1sc into 2nd ch from hook and 1sc in each ch across, ch1 and turn. (82 sts)

Row 2: 1hdc in each of next 9 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 20 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 9 sts, ch1 and turn. (90 sts)

Row 3: 1hdc in each of next 10 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 22 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 10 sts, ch1 and turn. (98 sts)

Row 4: 1hdc in each of next 11 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 24 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 11 sts, ch1 and turn. (106 sts)

Row 5: 1hdc in each of next 12 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 26 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 12 sts, ch1 and turn. (114 sts)

Row 6: 1hdc in each of next 13 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 28 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 13 sts, ch1 and turn. (122 sts)

Row 7: 1hdc in each of next 14 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 30 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 14 sts, ch1 and turn. (130 sts)

Row 8: 1hdc in each of next 15 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 32 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 15 sts, ch1 and turn. (138 sts)

Row 9: 1hdc in each of next 16 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 34 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 16 sts, ch1 and turn. (146 sts)

Row 10: 1hdc in each of next 17 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 36 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 17 sts, ch1 and turn. (154 sts)

Row 11: 1hdc in each of next 18 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 38 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 18 sts, ch1 and turn. (162 sts)

Row 12: 1hdc in each of next 19 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 40 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 19 sts, ch1 and turn. (170 sts)

Row 13: 1hdc in each of next 20 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 42 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 20 sts, ch1 and turn. (178 sts)

Row 14: 1hdc in each of next 21 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 44 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 21 sts, ch1 and turn. (186 sts)

Row 15: 1hdc in each of next 22 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 46 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 22 sts, ch1 and turn. (194 sts)

Row 16: 1hdc in each of next 23 sts, V-st into next st, (1 hdc into each of next 48 sts, V-st into next st) x 3 times, 1 hdc into each of next 23 sts, ch1 and turn. (202 sts)

Shaping the armholes:

Start working in rounds:

Round 1: 1hdc in each of next 24 sts, 1hdc into the first ch1sp, ch9, sk 50 sts ( All the stitches till the next corner), 1 hdc into the ch1sp of next corner, 1hdc into each of next 50 sts, 1hdc into ch1sp of next corner, sk 50 sts, 1hdc into the ch1sp of next corner, 1hdc in each of the next 24 sts, join with sl st into the top of first hdc at beginning of the row. (120 sts, inclusive the 9 chains for each underarm)

You will have: 25 sts left front side, 9 chains left underarm, 52 back, 9 chains right underarm, 25 right front side.

Body part:

Round 2: ch1, 1hdc in same st and 1hdc in each st around, join with slst into top of first hdc. (120 sts)

Begin of the small shell pattern:

Round 3: ch1, 1sc in same stitch, 1ch, skip 2dc, 1 small shell in next dc, ch1, skip 2dc, *1sc in next dc, 1ch,skip 2dc, 1 small shell in next dc, 1ch, skip 2dc*, repeat around from * to * slst to the top of first sc. (20 small shells)

Round 4: ch4 (count as the first dc and 1ch), (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in same stitch as the ch4, 1ch, 1sc in top of the next small shell, 1 ch, *1 small shell in next sc, 1ch, 1sc in top of next shell, 1ch*, repeat around from * to *, slst in the 3rd. ch of the beginning ch4. (20 small shells)

Round 5: 1slst to the top of the first small shell, 1ch, 1sc in same stitch, 1ch, 1 small shell in next sc, 1ch, *1sc into top of next small shell, 1ch, 1 small shell in next sc, 1ch*, repeat from * to * around, slst in the first sc of the round. (20 small shells)

Round 6- 18 repeat as rounds 4 and 5. (20 small shells)

Round 19: 1slst to top of first small shell, 1ch, 1sc into same st, 2ch, 1 small shell in next sc, 2ch, *1sc into top of next small shell, 2ch, 1 small shell in next sc, 2ch*, repeat from * to * around, slst into top of first sc of the round. (20 small shells)

Round 20: ch4 (count as the first dc and 1ch), (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in same stitch as the ch4, 2ch, 1sc in top of the next small shell, 2ch, *1 small shell in next sc, 2ch, 1sc in top of next small shell, 2ch*, repeat around from * to *, slst in the 3rd. ch of the beginning ch4. (20 small shells)

Begin of the big shell pattern:
big shell of 5dc: (1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in same stitch

Round 21: 1 sl st to top of first small shell, 1ch, 1sc into same st, 1 big shell in next sc, *1sc into top of next small shell, 1 big shell in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, slst into top of first sc of the round. (20 big shells)

Round 22: ch4 (count as the first dc and 1ch), (1dc, 1ch, 1dc, ch, 1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in same stitch as the ch4, *1sc into top of next big shell, 1 big shell into next sc *, repeat around from * to *, ending with 1sc into top of last big shell, slst in the 3rd. ch of the beginning ch4. (20 big shells)

Round 23: 2slst to top of first big shell, 1ch, 1sc into same st, 1 big shell in next sc, *1sc into top of next big shell, 1 big shell in next sc*, repeat from * to * around, slst into top of first sc of the round. (20 big shells)

Rounds 24-37: repeat as rounds 22-23. Add more rounds if you want a longer top.

Bottom Edging:

ch1, work *1sl st into the top of next st, 1ch*, repeat from * to * around.
Cut yarn. Fasten off invisibly.

The edging for the yoke split and the button holes:

Join yarn with sl st into the top left hand corner of the split mid front and continue down along split with 1sc around the bar of the first hdc of each row, 1 sc dec at the V base of the split, *work 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, chain 4 (or as many chains needed to fit your button size)* repeat from * to * 3 times for 3 buttons, continue with sc till the top. Cut yarn. Fasten off.
Sew 3 buttons on.
If you like, you can work a round of sc around the sleeves.
