The yarn was provided by Red Heart Yarns.

You can choose to work the skirt in one solid color, or make a vertical striped skirt using 2 or more colors, or even self striping yarn. It would look very pretty either way!
Here is an edited picture with other color optios for the stripes! Really love the purple shades!

SIZE: 2- 3 years toddler, easy to adapt for other sizes, just start with more chains for a longer skirt and make more rows to make it wider.
Another way to size up of the skirt is to use a thicker yarn and larger hook size as in the pattern indicated.

Finished measurements:
- total height: 22 cm ( if you'll like a longer skirt start with more chains)
- waist circumference: 53 cm with lot of stretch

GAUGE: with 3.5 mm crochet hook: 21 sts= 10 cm (will give the height of the skirt)

SUPPLIES:

  • light weight yarn:
    1. For the solid color skirt: DK, light weight 3 yarn in 3 colors
      I have used almost 1 skein of Red Heart Yarn's Anne Geddes Baby, color Taffy (pink= Color A), small amount of Anne Geddes Baby - Lily (white = Color B) and Anne Geddes Baby - Spearmint (green = Color C);
    2. For the striped skirt:1/2 skein of Taffy and 1/2 skein of Spearmint.
    3. You can replace it with any other DK yarn that meets the gauge.
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook;

  • 4 mm crochet hook for the waist band;

  • elastic band;

  • sewing needle and sewing thread to sew the ends of the elastic band together;

  • tapestry needle to sew in the ends;

  • scissors.

NOTES:

  1. The skirt is crocheted side to side in rows working into the back loops only of the stitches; after joining the 2 sides at the back, the waist band will be worked in rounds using the both top loops of the stitches. It is a very easy pattern, just be sure to count the stitches each row and not to lose the stitches at the beginnings/ ends of the rows.
  2. The ch 3 at the beginning of the even rows will not be counted as a stitch, it has only a decorative purpose, to form the wavy edge of the pleats.
  3. The pattern is written for the solid color with changes for the striped version below.

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • blo: back loops only
  • slst: slip stitch

INSTRUCTIONS:

A) VERSION WITH SOLID COLOR:

With a 3.5 mm hook and yarn color A, chain 45.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and sc into each of next 11 ch, hdc in next 14 ch, dc in next 18 ch, ch 3, turn. (44 sts)

Row 2: dc blo in next 18 sts, hdc blo in next 14 sts, sc blo in next 12 sts; ch 1, turn. (44 sts)

Row 3: sc blo in next 12 sts, hdc blo in next 14 sts, dc blo in next 18 sts, ch 3, turn. (44 sts)

Rows 4 - 84: Repeat as rows 2-3. (Easy way to count the rows: Count the ch3 wavy edges and multiply by 2.)

B) STRIPED VERSION:

Work the same as for the solid color version, only changing the colors after each second row, beginning with row 3.

The color change will be made each time at the narrow side of the skirt worked with sc sts. Don't cut yarn when making color changes, carry the yarn not in use from row to row.

Color Change Tip: At the end of each second row (beginning with row 3) work the last sc of the row till half; having 2 loops on hook join other color yarn and finish the last sc with the other color yarn. Continue with other color yarn, ch 1, bring color not in use to the back of your work and work the first st of the next row around the color not in use. This way you will carry the yarns from row to row.

When using 2 colors, if you start the skirt with color A stripe, you should finish with color B stripe. Your crochet piece will look like this:

Then join the sides the same way as written for the solid color version below.

Joining the sides:

If you have worked using 2 or multiple colors, turn the skirt inside out. If you have used one solid color, it doesn't matter, because both sides are looking the same. (See photo collage below)

Fold the crochet piece in half. Working through both top loops of the stitches of each side, slip stitch across. Do not sl st into the ch3 at the lower edge of the skirt, to keep the wavy edge! (44 sl st) Cut yarn. Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Turn your piece on the other side (both versions - solid color and multicolor). From now this will be the right side! Continue to work on the right side.

The waist band worked in the round:

Change to hook size 4 mm! At the middle back of the narrow edge of the skirt join color B. (Or work the first round using color A).

Round 1: ch 1 and work 84 sc evenly spaced around the edge; that means 1st in each ridge and 1st in each back ridge. Join with sl st into first sc. (84 st)

Round 2: ch1, 1 sc into same st and 1 sc in each st around, join with sl st into top of first sc.

Round 3 is worked around the elastic band: ch 1, work sc into each st and around the elastic band. (See photo collage below! )

Join with sl st into top of first sc. Cut yarn leaving a tail. Cut the elastic band and sew the ends together with sewing thread. With the yarn tail stitch a few times over the joining of the elastic band. Fasten off.

FLOWER PATTERN:

(Make two using contrasting colors for petals and flower center.)

Flower center: With a 4 mm hook and green yarn make a magic ring. 5 sc into ring, join with sl st. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Flower petals: Join white yarn into top of a sc of the flower center. *ch 2, 3 dc in same st, ch 2, sl st into next st *, repeat from * to * 5 times. (5 petals made). Cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew the flowers on the skirt. Fasten off. Sew the flowers on the skirt.

  6. Hello Kinga, I love this crocheted skirt! I've been looking for a skirt to make for myself for a couple of years but I haven't found one I like. Is this pattern available in adult sizes 12-14?
    Thank you,
