Crossed Stitch Headband with Flower Applique - Free Crochet Pattern: Written Instructions and Crochet Chart

This crossed stitch headband  pattern is the third from my elasticized crochet headbands series! Wear it with or without the flower applique, the choice is yours!

Crossed Stitch Headband Pattern

Crossed Stitch Headband with Flower Applique (Adult Size) - Free Crochet Pattern: Written Instructions and Crochet Chart

Size: adult women; you can easily adapt for smaller sizes working fewer rows. You can also use only one elastic and work more rows until you reach the desired length.

Materials:
small amount (approx 20 g) of cotton yarn in 2 colors; yarn weight: DK 3 (Light)

I have used Red Heart Miami (available in Europe). You can replace it with other cotton yarn having the same yarn weight.

3 mm crochet hook

2 elastic hair ties (option

sewing needle

Stitches, terms (US) and abbreviations used:
- ch: chain

- sc: single crochet

- dc: double crochet

- ssc: standing single crochet: wrap yarn around hook once; while holding the yarn tail with the other hand, insert hook in the stitch indicated in the pattern, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

- csdc: chainless starting double crochet (See this Tutorial by Moogly)

- sl st: slip stitch

- crossed double crochet (explained in the pattern)

Written Instructions:
Take one hair tie; we will cast on directly on it. See the picture tutorial from my Thread Headband pattern.

Row 1: With red yarn begin with a standing sc around the elastic band. Work 6 sc more around the elastic band. (7 sc total) . Turn.

Row 2: 1 csdc, 1 dc in next st, sk 1 st, 3 dc in next st, sk 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. Turn.

Row 3: 1 csdc, 1dc in next st, sk 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, working back over last dc made, make 1dc into first of 2 dc just skipped; 1 dc in each of next 2 sts.

Row 4: 1 csdc, 1 dc in next st, 3 dc into ch 1 space of the crossed st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.

Rows 5-32: Repeat as row 3- 4.

Take the second hair tie, insert it through the first one, fold in the middle and pass one side through the other side, pull till the both elastics are forming a knot. See photo collage below!

Casting the second tail on the hair tie: ch 1, make 1 sc around the elastic and in each of 7 sts of previous row.

Cut yarn leaving a tail. You will note that the top loops of the stitches from the last row are at the edge of the hair tie. You will need to pull them to the inside of the headband and sew them like in the collage below, inserting the needle through the both top loops of the stitches from the last row and though the stitches of the row before. Continue to stitch along the row. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Flower Pattern

Flower Center: With red, ch 5, sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, ( 1 sc into ring, ch 3) x 8 times, sl st to first sc. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Petals: Join white yarn with standing sc into a ch 3 space of the center, ch2, (3 dc, ch2, 1 sc) into same ch space, * ( 1 sc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 1 sc) into next ch space *, repeat from * to * for each remaining ch space; sl st into first sc of the round.
(8 petals made)
Cut yarn. Fasten off.

Note: If your flower is starting to curl, block it.
Sew the flower on the headband.
