Majestic Bloom Granny Square Free Crochet Pattern with Tutorial

The Majestic Bloom Granny Square was born from my attempt to achieve an improved version of my Dahlia in a Square Granny Square free crochet pattern. The initial idea was to realize a granny square with no visible seams, but carried by inspiration, I ended up adding a round of leaves around the flower.

You will find here both improved versions (with and without leaves), so you can chose your favorite. The good thing is that both versions, with and without leaves are having the same size, allowing you to combine them in your projects.

Supplies:
- DK weight cotton yarn in 3 colors. (I used cotton yarn, but you can chose the yarn of your choice and use an appropriate hook size)

In the pattern: color A= hot pink; color B= green, color C= dark blue/ black in the picture.

- 4 mm crochet hook (G)

- tapestry needle to sew in the loose ends

Notes:

The Dahlia Granny Square is worked in rounds, starting at the center with the flower.
For the version with leaves, the leaves are crocheted directly in the round, after finishing the flower, without having to sew them on later.

For a nice, seamless look, the rounds will be started with standing stitches (standing sc, hdc and dc)! If you prefer you can also start the rounds using the standard starting ch 1 for sc, ch 2 for hdc and ch 3 for dc.

It is very important to count your stitches, to have exactly the same numbers as in the pattern indicated, so that the sides of the square have the same size!

Stitches, Terms (US) and Abbreviation used:
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
slst: slip stitch
flo: front loop only
blo: back loop only
sk: skip
yo: yarn over
ch sp: chain space

Special stitches:
Standing sc: See this Tutorial by Moogly.

Standing hdc
: See this Tutorial by Moogly.

Standing dc:
See this Tutorial by Moogly.

Picot stitch: See this Video Tutorial by Moogly

dc3 tog = double crochet 3 together: yo, insert hook in the st indicated in the pattern, draw loop through, (yo, draw through 2 loops, leaving the next loop on hook), *yo, insert hook in the same st, draw loop through, (yo, draw through 2 loops, leaving the next loops on hook)*, repeat from * to * 2 times; you have 4 loops on hook, yo, pull through all 4 loops on the hook.

In other words, you will make 3 unfinished double crochet, leaving each time the last loop on hook, so at the end you'll have 4 loops on hook; yo, draw through all 4 loops on the hook.

tr4tg triple 4 together: [yo twice, insert hook in the stitch indicated in the pattern, draw loop through, (yo, draw through the first 2 loops, leaving the next loops on hook)*2 times]*4 times in the same stitch. You have 5 loops on the hook; yo, draw through all 5 loops on the hook.

In other words, you will make 4 unfinished treble crochet, leaving each time the last loop on hook,so at the end you'll have 5 loops on hook; yo, draw through all 5 loops on the hook.)

  • Version A - Granny Square Version with Leaves:
A) The Flower ( I made a Step by Step Picture Tutorial here!)
Before you proceed, maybe you would like to watch below the Video Tutorial made by Clare of Bobwilson123 for my Dahlia Pattern!

Flower Instructions
With color A ch3, slst into first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: ch 1 (does not count as a st), work 10 hdc into ring, sl st to top of first hdc. (10 stitches)
Continue with the petals.

Petals:  First layer of petals - as you crochet, help the petals pop out correctly by pushing them up from the backside. Round 2: ch3, tr4tog in the next hdc, ch3, * slst in the next hdc, ch3, tr4tog in the next hdc, ch3*, repeat from * to * 4 times, end with sl st into joining of the the round below.
(5 petals made)

Second layer of petals: Round 3: Fold the petals from the back to the front and work under petals, in the back ridges of the center. Under each petal there are 2 ridges, total 10 ridges (a little more difficult to see them when working the center in same color!)

Ch2 (will count as the first hdc).Work 1hdc in the first back ridge of the center (right under the beginning ch2), 2hdc in each of the next 9 ridges, slst to top of the ch2 at the beginning of round. (20 stitches)

Round 4:  ch3, tr4tog in the front loop of the first hdc, ch3, * slst in the front loop of the next hdc, ch3, tr4tog in the front loop of the next hdc, ch3*, repeat from * to * around, ending with a slst to front loop of joining from previous round. (10 petals made) The flower is finished! Cut yarn. Fasten off. Weave in the loose ends. Arrange the petals in the right form. Continue working the granny square in the round! First turn your flower with the back side facing you and identify the 20 back ridges under the petals, like in the picture no.1 from the photo collage below. The next round will be worked in those back ridges, in the same manner as for round 3! Now turn your flower on the right side and fold the petals from back to front, to work under petals.

Round 5: Join B with a standing hdc in one of the back ridges under the petals, (alternative ch2) work 1 hdc into the same back ridge, 2 hdc in each of the next 19 ridges, slst to top of the standing hdc/ ch 2 at the beginning of round. (40 stitches)

 Another square I made:

Dahlia Granny Square - Free Crochet Pattern with Tutorial on myhobbyiscrochet.com

For this square I have used Red Heart Soft yarn and a crochet hook size 5 mm and stopped at round 8.  If you would like to change colors like I did, don't join into round with sl st, cut yarn at the end of the round and fasten off invisibly. Then join new color with standing dc into a corner space.
