Halloween Pumpkin Basket - Free Crochet Pattern - Guest Contributor Post

Halloween is coming up! It is that time of year again that you can give people a good scare and then have a laugh about it!

Halloween Pumpkin Basket - Free Crochet Pattern
Children love halloween for 2 different reasons, I believe. The first one is that they get to play dress-up and the second of course is candy!
Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that grown-ups love halloween for the same reasons. Well, most of them. So let's make a crochet, pumpkin shaped, basket for the little ones to go on trick or treating. But even if this fine holiday is not celebrated in your country you can make a small basket to decorate your home and let the spirits come to you!

This crochet pattern was designed by Lou from Malloo Crochet Designs exclusively for My Hobby is Crochet Blog.

You will need:
- acrylic worsted yarn in orange and green
- 4 mm, 6mm crochet hook
- tapestry needle
- scisscors
- stitch marker

Abbreviations:
MR: magic ring
sl st: slip stitch
hdc: half double crochet
inc: increase
dec: decrease
st: stitch
ch: chain
sk: skip
tr: treble crochet
FO: fasten off

The pattern is written in standard American terms.

For a nice sturdier look, we are going to hold the yarn double for the entire project. I usually prefer to have two skeins of the same color and take one strand of yarn from each, instead of one skein and use the beginning and the ending of the yarn together. It's much easier.

Basket Pattern:

R1: MR, ch 1, 10 hdc in ring, sl st,close ring tight (10)

R2: ch 1, hdc inc in each st around , sl st to join (20)

R3: ch 1, * hdc in first st, hdc inc in next st * repeat around, sl st to join (30)

R4: ch 1, * hdc in next 2 st, hdc inc in next st * repeat around, sl st to join (40)

R5: ch 1, sk the st with the ch 1 and make 6 tr in next st, sk 2 st, hdc dec, * sk 2 st, 6 tr in next st, sk 2 st, hdc dec * repeat from * to * 3 more times, sk 2 st, 6 tr in next st, sk 2 st, hdc in last st, sl st to join (42)

R6: Ch 1, * dc in first st, tr in next 4 st, dc in next st, sc in hdc dec of previous round * repeat from * to * around, sl st to join (42)

R7-10: repeat round 6 (only now the sc is made in the sc of the previous round because there is no hdc dec) (42)

R11: sl st around and FO

If you would like to make the smaller version of the basket for home decoration you can stop at round 7 and make one final round just with sl st, for a polished finish!

Handle:
Join yarn (again held double) at the point where you finished your project, ch 35 and sl st at the opposite side of the basket, then ch 1 and sc in each ch, until you reach again the other end, make a sl st an fasten off.
