(Faux Knit) Pinwheel Beanie (All sizes) - Free Crochet Pattern + Tutorial

Worked with a fine weight yarn, this cute spiral crochet hat is perfect for spring and fall.

*Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links.

The faux knit look will be obtained by working in rows using the half double crochet in 3rd loop at the front (you can watch the video for the stitch in the pattern below)!

The hat is worked side to side; each row you'll increase the edge of one side and decrease the edge of the other side. You’ll end up with a parallelogram shape as seen in the sample piece below.

Faux Knit Pinwheel Beanie (All sizes) - Free Crochet Pattern

The small sides of the parallelogram (the starting row and the final row) will be joined together to form a tube. This could make a pretty diagonal ribbed cowl.

To form a beanie, you’ll weave in and out around one edge of the tube, then pull yarn tail tight to close the hole.

The brim will be worked in the round using the half double crochet in the 3rd loop at the back.

Sizes: Preemie to adult large.  See the pattern for individual sizes.

GAUGE: 24 hdc in 3rd loop at front worked in rows = 10 cm / 4"

and 18 hdc in 3rd loop at back worked in the round = 10 cm / 4"

SUPPLIES:
- yarn: Premier Yarns Garden ; yarn weight fine (2).
Pictured in the pattern are Premier Yarns Garden, colorway See (child size)
Serenity Garden Yarn-Bouquet (baby size).

For smaller sizes one skein will be enough, for child - adult sizes you will need one skein + a small amount from a second skein of yarn.
A self striping yarn works beautiful with the pattern, but a solid color yarn will make a beautiful textured spiral hat also.

- 3.5 mm/E crochet hook

- yarn needle to sew in the ends

- scissors.

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
st: stitch

Special stitches:
hdc in the 3rd loop at front (worked in rows): Watch the embedded Video from Maggie’s Crochet below to learn how to work the hdc in 3rd loop at front.

hdc in the 3rd loop at the back (worked in the round): Watch this Video from Moogly

Hdc2tog: half double crochet two together =half double crochet decrease. For less bulk, please use Moogly’s method for the hdc2tog!

NOTES: 1. Please count your stitches each row!
2. Using both loops for the increase in the last stitch of the row will prevent having holes on the edge!
3.Important! Starting with the row 2, you’ll work all the hdc sts of the next rows in the 3rd loop at front, this will create the faux knit ridged pattern!
4. The large sides of the parallelogram (given by the numbers of rows worked) will determine the hat circumference.

5. The piece has a lot of stretch, in height also. For best results, please try it on the recipient's head. If it is too wide, before closing the top, you can still unravel a few rows; if it is too tight, you can work some additional rows.
6.It is easier to count the knit looking horizontal ridges as to count the rows! At the end of the last row, the yarn tail should be on the same side as the yarn tail at the beginning of the work. (See the parallelogram picture above!)
7. The number of knit looking ridges should be the same on both right and wrong sides of the piece, in order to have the correct number of the stitches needed around the edge to form the brim.
The hat height will be approximative 3-4 cm smaller as the short sides of the parallelogram (given by the number of stitches in the row).

All sizes:

Joining into tube: Fold the small sides so that the foundation chain meets the last row as pictured below.

Faux Knit Pinwheel Beanie (All sizes) - Free Crochet Pattern

To join them, we will slip stitch them in way that will create a ridge the same as the ones made by the hdc in 3rd loop at front! There will be no visible seam this way!

(This will be the wrong side) Chain 1. Insert the hook through the 3rd loop at front of the first hdc st of the last row and through both loops of corresponding starting chain on the other side. Yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.

Work the same along the edges until you reach the end.

Faux Knit Pinwheel Beanie (All sizes) - Free Crochet Pattern

Do not cut yarn, (you will continue with the brim)!
Turn the hat inside out (this will be the right side from now on!); you can admire your perfect seam, looking as a knit ridge on the right side, as seen below!

The total number of ridges will be increased by 1.
The total number of ridges will be now: Preemie: 15
Newborn: 18
0 - 3 months: 21
3 - 6 months: 23
6 - 12 months: 24
12 - 24 months: 26
3 - 5 years: 27
6 - 10 years: 29
Adult small: 30
Adult medium: 32
Adult large: 34

Continue with the brim for all sizes! The brim measures 1.5 cm for preemie - 24 months babies and 2 cm for 3 year child - adult large sizes. If a longer hat is needed, you can add more rounds for the brim.

The Brim: (worked in the round):

Round 1: ch 1, work hdc sts evenly placed around the edge this way: 1 hdc into each V looking ridge, 2 hdc between ridges; (maybe at the end of the round you will need to place 3 sts between the last and first ridge - see the total st info below); join with sl st to top of first hdc.

The total number of stitches around for each size should be:
Preemie: 46
Newborn: 54
0 - 3 months: 64
3 - 6 months: 70
6 - 12 months: 74
12 - 24 months: 78
3 - 5 years: 82
6 - 10 years: 86
Adult small: 92
Adult medium: 96
Adult large: 102

Round 2: ch1, working into 3rd loop at the back, hdc in each hdc around, join with sl st to top of first hdc.
(For child and adult sizes, repeat round 2 one more time.)

Round 3: ch1, inserting the hook into 3rd loop at the back of hdc sts, work sc in each hdc around. Cut yarn. Finish off invisibly.

Closing the top of the beanie:
Turn the hat inside out. Thread a tapestry needle with the long yarn tail you left at the beginning of the work; weave in and out around the hole on top of the hat. Pull yarn tail very tight to close the hole. To secure, weave the yarn through a few times. Cut yarn and fasten off.

    1. You're very welcome! :) The one with the reward in heaven will be yourself for crocheting those hats for the little ones! <3

  2. I followed your pattern for adult medium, it was way too big, was it because I used a bulky yarn?

    1. Sure,if you are using a different yarn weight as in the pattern indicated and you have a different gauge, your hat will end up different size. Always follow the indications regarding yarn weight, hook size and gauge.

  3. I think this pattern is wonderful! I am almost finished making the rows. I have never made a hat constructed in this way before. Would you please give the dimensions the parallelogram should be for each size (not just how many ridges) so I (and others) could make it with different yarn weights? Thank you very much.

    1. Hi I saw your comment for dimensions in using other sized yarns. I made the hat using Super Saver Stripes by Red Heart its a #4 size yarn. I used the a "G" hook using the girls 6-10 size to fit a 21" band. My adult hats usually are 21" bands. I also kept close a hat I made that is the correct size for the size I wanted to make (different Pattern). So I could make sure I had enough rows. I ended up with 24 rows before stitching the ends together. Just play with other yarns If you are using bigger yarn go down the size hook one or two sizes smaller than normal. Then adjust the rows by measuring how wide you want your end project to be. Mine measured at the band 8 1/2" wide. I hope this helps you.
