Planned Color Pooling "Bohemian Hat & Cowl Set" - Free Crochet Patterns

Planned color pooling in crochet is like magic! Using a ball of multi-colored yarn and simple crochet stitches you can get beautiful argyle-type plaid patterns. You will need a bit of practice and patience to get the yarn to pool, but the results will be so very satisfying!

I love how this Bohemian Set turned out! I hope you will love it also!

The yarn used in this pattern was provided by Red Heart Yarns.

COWL SIZE:
Cowl: 16 cm x 76 cm, approx: 6” x 30”
For a larger cowl, add more rows.

HAT SIZE:
The hat is customizable to the size you need; here sized to fit a 5 year old little girl.
Hat height: 19 cm (approx. 7.4")
For a longer hat, you could make the brim wider, crocheting more rounds as in the pattern indicated!
For a wider hat, make more rows.

GAUGE: It is important to maintain the correct placement of the stitch color vs. gauge!
I have adjusted the tension throughout the stitches in order to get 3 sts for each color.

COLOR SEQUENCE:
3 Blue
3 Purple
3 Blue
3 Pink
3 Orange
3 Pink

This will be a full color sequence that will have to repeat throughout the pattern!

SUPPLIES:

- 250 g of Red Heart Soft Bohemian (color A)

- small amount of coordinating yarn used for the edging  (color B).
(I have used Caron Simply Soft Yarn Fuchsia, but you could use Red Heart Soft, Very Pink.)

- Crochet Hook, Size 4.5mm (although recommended hook size for this yarn is 5.5 mm, I had to go down on size to get the yarn to pool the way I wanted.)

- Yarn Needle

- scissors

- pompom maker,  used here the Clover Large Pom Pom Maker

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):

- ch: chain

- sc: single crochet

- sc blo: single crochet back loop only (used for the hat edging)

- tw sc: twisted single crochet (used for the cowl edging)

- sk: skip

- st: stitch

- A: color A;

- B: color B

Special Stitch (used for shaping the crown of the hat):
dec moss st= decrease moss stitch: insert hook into next ch-space, draw up a loop; holding the 2 loops on hook, insert hook into next ch-space, draw up a loop; you have now 3 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. You have decreased 1 moss stitch!

HELPFUL ARTICLE WITH VIDEO TUTORIALS ON PLANNED COLOR POOLING WITH CROCHET:

To learn how to crochet planned color pooling, I recommend this article on Red Heart Yarns:
A Quick Guide to Color Polling (including video tutorials and a full list of yarns from Red Heart Yarns that work great with planned color pooling).

COWL PATTERN:
Begin by chaining through at least one full color sequence of the color repeat (here: Blue, Purple, Blue, Pink, Orange, Pink), making sure that the last chain on your hook is the first color of the next section. I have started chaining at the beginning of blue color and ended with blue on the hook.

You will now start to work the Moss stitch pattern!

Row 1: work 1sc into 4th ch from hook, *ch1, 1sc around the foundation ch (instead of going into ch st); repeat from * until you get through one full color sequence. (18 moss stitches total)

For this particular yarn you should have 3 sts in each color; loosing some stitches or tighten them up to get 3 sts for each color.

Don’t worry about the long tail of foundation chain stitches! You will unravel the unused chain stitches at the end of the work.

To get the argyle to work, you’ll need to shift the color sequence over by 1 stitch (if not, the colors will stack on each other forming vertical stripes).
To shift the color sequence over by 1 st, unravel the last sc and ch 1 of the last color (here pink)! (You’ll have now 17 moss stitches total)

Row 2: ch 2, turn and continue with the moss stitch: work 1 sc in next ch-1 space, *ch1, sk 1sc, work 1sc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * to end, finishing with 1 sc into last ch space.

You will need to adjust the tension of the sts to get the correct number of stitches (here 3 sts in each color) in the correct place every row! (17 moss stitches total)

Row 3: Repeat as row 2

This and every next row, the colors should shift to the left by 1 st from the colors two rows below)

Repeat row 2 until cowl measures 29" (74 cm ) or the length you wish. Fasten off.

Here is how my planned color pooling piece looks like:

Free Crochet Pattern: Planned Color Pooling Bohemian Hat & Cowl Set

Unravel unused chain stitches of foundation chain:
Slide the sts along the foundation chain to match the width of the rest of the cowl and unravel unused chain stitches. Weave in the ends.

Edging:
With right side facing and working across the sts of the last row, join B with 1 twsc into first ch-2 space, ch1, work 1 twsc in same st, *ch1, sk 1sc, work 1 twsc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * across the row to ch-2 corner space, work (1twsc, 1ch, 1twsc) in ch2- corner space;

rotate cowl to work along long side edge: *ch1, 1 twsc into next ch-2 space on the edge, ch1, sk 1 st on the edge; repeat across the long edge, placing (1twsc, 1ch, 1twsc) in ch2- corner space;

rotate cowl to work along foundation chain: *ch1, 1 twsc in next space between sc of Row 1; repeat from * to corner space, work (1twsc, 1ch, 1twsc) in ch2- corner space;

rotate cowl and work along long side edge the same as first long side edge. Join with sl st to first twsc. Fasten off.

Finishing the cowl:
Lay the rectangle piece flat and fold both sides down until they cross over.  With right side facing and using yarn color B,  sew or slip stitch along the edges indicated with the arrows.

HAT PATTERN:

Note: The hat is worked sideways in rows, then seamed at the middle back. After seaming the piece, you’ll shape the crown working decreases in the round. Finally you’ll add a brim worked in the round also.
Follow exactly the cowl pattern above and work so many rows until the piece fits the head circumference. Turn the hat inside out and sew it up along the ends using the whip stitch.

Shaping the Crown of hat - Work around the edge in rounds, but turn after joining with slip stitch!
Round 1: Join B with a standing sc at the back seam, ch 1, *1 sc into next ch-2 space on the edge, ch1, sk 1 st on the edge; repeat from * around, sl st to top of standing sc, ch1 and turn!
(I got 40 moss sts total).
Round 2: * 1dec moss st, ch 1, (1 sc into next ch- space, ch1) x 2 times, repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of first decrease st; ch1 and turn. (30 moss sts total)
Round 3: * 1dec moss st, ch 1, 1 sc into next ch- space, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of first decrease st; ch1 and turn. (20 moss sts total)
Round 4: *dec moss st, ch1; repeat from * around, join with sl st to top of first decrease st. (10 moss sts total).
Cut yarn leaving a long tail to close the hole on top of the hat.
Turn the hat inside out, thread needle with the long yarn tail, insert the needle through remaining sts on the last row of the crown and pull the yarn tight to close the hole. Weave in to secure.

Edging:
Round 1: Join B with a standing sc at the back seam, work sc evenly around, join with sl st to top of first st.
Round 2: ch 1, sc blo in each st around, join with sl st into back loop of first sc.
Round 3: ch 1, sc blo in each st around, cut yarn and finish off invisibly; (see this Tutorial for the Invisible Finish Off in Crochet).
Make a pompom using a pompom maker or a card board, then attach the pompom on top of the hat.
I hope you enjoy this pattern!
