Side2Side Hat - Free Crochet pattern including sizes from 12 months through Adult Large

If you love the look of knited hats, but prefer crocheting, the Side2Side Hat is a perfect choice. As the title suggests, the hat is worked from side to side in rows.

Side2Side Hat - Free Crochet pattern

SIZE: from 12 months through adult large

GAUGE: 16 yoslst = 10 cm (4”)

SUPPLIES:
- yarn Red Heart Soft  (shown here in colorway Turquoise, White and Coral); yarn weight: 4 Medium) The amount of yarn will differ from size to size, but one ball of yarn should be enough.
- 5.5 mm crochet hook (shown here my Furls Wooden Hook, Cocobolo)
- yarn needle
- scissors

NOTES: The hat is crocheted, but it looks like knitted.
It is worked sideways in rows, back and forth, then joined together at the back.
Here is how my sample piece looks like before joining the sides together:

Side2Side Hat - Free Crochet pattern

The height of the hat will be determined by the length of the foundation chain and the hat circumference will be given by the number of rows. The piece has a lot of stretch. Depending on your own work tension, you might need to work more or maybe fewer rows as in the pattern indicated. For best results, please try it on the recipient's head. If it is too wide, before closing the top, you can still unravel a few rows; if it is too tight, you can work some additional rows.

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS, (US TERMS):
- ch: chain
- back bump of chains. Click here for my picture tutorial.
- sl st : slip stitch
- sl st blo: slip stitch back loop only
- sc: single crochet
- sc blo: single crochet back loop only
- st: stitch

Special Stitches:
Yarn Over -Slip Stitch (yo-slst): Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst). Click here for my PICTURE TUTORIAL!

Yarn over- slip stitch back loops only (Yo-slst-blo): work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Note: Be careful at the end of the rows to not lose the last sl st. I have found it easier to work into last sl st inserting a smaller hook size.

  1. I really like this stitch. Looks great on all ages and unisex designs. I have trouble doing the stitch though. I can do hdc no problem but find it hard to draw the 3rd loop through the 1st 2 loops. Any hints? Or is it just me!

    1. Hi Lynnr! It sure takes a bit of practice! After a while it becomes easy and fast. What I can recommend is, to hold the middle loop and the 3rd. loop on hook between your left thumb and middle finger and slip the first loop through the other 2 loops on hook. I hope it makes sense.
