Polar Bear & Brown Bear Appliques - Free Crochet Pattern

These crocheted bear appliques are cute embellishments for any baby/ small child items, such as hats, cardigans, baby blankets, etc...

Crochet Bear Appliques

SIZE: bear’s head without ears has a diameter of 2 inches (5 cm)

SUPPLIES:

  • >Crochet hook size 1.5 mm
  • >Embroidery floss
  • For the brown bear 1 skein in each of the following colors:

    1. - warm brown for head (color A),
    2. - light brown for muzzle and ears (color B)
    3. - coffee brown (or black) - Color C - for the eyes

    For the polar bear 1 skein in each of following colors:

    1. white (color D)- for head and ears
    2. light grey for muzzle (color E)
    3. coffee brown or black for eyes and nose (color F)
  • Small amount of white thread for the light reflex in the eyes.
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors

STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
- ch: chain
- slst
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- ch2sp: chain 2 space

INSTRUCTIONS (both bears):

Head

Use A= warm brown embroidery floss for the brown bear

D= white for the polar bear

Magic ring.

Round 1: ch1, work 10 hdc into magic ring, slst to top of first hdc. (10 sts)

Round 2: Ch1, 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to top of first hdc. (20 sts total)

Round 3: Ch1, *2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next st, rep from * around, sl st to top of first hdc. (30 sts total)

Round 4: Ch1, *2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around, sl st to top of first hdc. (40 sts total)

Round 5: Ch1, *2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around, sl st to top of first hdc. (50 sts total)

Cut yarn. Fasten off invisibly.

Muzzle

Use B=light brown embroidery floss for the brown bear
E= light grey for polar bear

Magic ring.

Round 1: ch 2, work 12 dc into magic ring, slst to top of first dc. (12 sts)

Round 2: ch2, work 2hdc in each dc around,slst to top of first hdc. (24 sts)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew to muzzle onto head. Fasten off invisibly.

Eyes:

With C - coffee brown (or black if you prefer) make a magic ring. Chain 1 and work 6 sc into ring; fasten off invisibly.

Here is how the circles should look like:

Ears:

Take the head piece and fold it in half along the joining seam.(The seam should be on the bottom half, so that you will cover it up with the muzzle.)

Mark the middle stitch on top of head.

1) Right Ear :

For brown bear:

With the right side facing you, count 6 sts to the right of the marked st and join B into the 6th st.

Row 1: ch 2, work 6 hdc in same st, ch2, slst into same st.

Cut yarn. Fasten off. Turn and work the next row on the wrong side.

Row 2: Join A into next unworked st to the right on head base, slst into ch2sp of previous row worked with B, ch1, work 1 sc in same ch2sp, 2 sc in each of the 6 hdc around ear, 1 sc in next ch2sp, slst in next 2 unworked st on head, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: work 1 slst in each st around the ear, slst into next st on head. Cut yarn. Fasten off.

2) Left Ear : Count 6 sts to the left of the marked st. Join B into the 6th. St and work the left ear the same way as the right ear.

For the polar bear work the ears in white only (without cutting yarn after the first row) using the instructions from the brown bear. After finishing the right ear, do not cut yarn. Continue working 1 slst in each of next 10 sts on head to the left of right ear. Into the 10sts work the second ear.

Finishing:

Sew muzzle right above the first sc round at bottom of head, making sure that it is centered between the ears.

With C embroider nose and mouth onto muzzle.

Sew the eyes above the muzzle. With white thread sew the light reflex in the eyes.

Embroider eyebrows using C.
