Unicorn Bricks Baby Blanket - Free Crochet Pattern

I’m super excited to finally share with you this wonderful baby blanket pattern I have been working on for a while. And let me tell you, I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out! I hope you will love it as much as I do!

*Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links and at no additional cost to you, I might earn a small commission if you decide to purchase through these links. Thank you! Some of the yarn used in this pattern was provided by Red Heart Yarns. Crochet Hook provided by Furls Crochet.

You can find the free crochet pattern for the Unicorn Brick Baby Blanket right here, on My Hobby is Crochet blog! Included is also s link to the Video Tutorial of the blanket!

This blanket is crocheted, but it looks so much like knitted and it looks beautiful on both sides! While on the right side you’ll have the lovely brick stitch pattern, on the wrong side you’ll get a pretty striped ribbed pattern, similar to knitted Brioche. Isn't it great to have a reversible blanket?

I really love the wrong side too! How about you?

Don’t you just love the perfect symmetry of the color stripes? All that “magic” was made alternating rows of Red Heart Super Saver in White with the beautiful self striping yarn Red Heart Super Saver in colorway Retro Stripe. They made such a beautiful combination!

GAUGE: 14 sts and 14 rows = 4 inches x 4 inches ( 10 cm x 10 cm)

SIZE: This baby blanket is a square of 32 inches x 32 inches (approx 81 cm x 81 cm)

You can adjust this pattern for larger blanket sizes if you like!
For the width chain a multiple of 6 + 5 extra stitches, + 1 extra stitch for the turning chain!
For the length add more repeat rows in the stitch pattern.

SUPPLIES:

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS:
- ch: chain

- back bump of chains -> Click here for my picture tutorial.

- st: stitch

- RS: right side of work

- WS: wrong side of work

- Color A: yarn color white

- Color B: yarn color Retro Stripe

SPECIAL STITCHES:

  1. Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst): Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst)

  2. Click here for my PICTURE TUTORIAL for both yo-slst and yo-slst-blo!

  3. Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo) work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.

  4. Check out the VIDEO TUTORIAL for the yo-slst-blo on YouTube HERE!

  5. Long Double Crochet (ldc): Skip two rows (2 knit look ridges), work 1 dc by inserting hook from bottom to top under the two loops of the yoslst directly below those two skipped rows. (This will create a mock cable!) To work next yo-slst Skip the st in the current row - the one behind the dc you just made.

  6. Check out here a detailed Step by Step Picture Tutorial of the Long Double Crochet and the BRICK STITCH used for this pattern!

  7. The 3rd loop at the back of stitch: is the loop at the back of the st, below the back loop. (You will only use it when crocheting the border!)

UPDATE 03/17/2020: A VIDEO TUTORIAL FOR THE UNICORN BRICKS BABY BLANKET is available here!

NOTES:

  • Each row begins with a ch 1 that will not be counted as a stitch!
  • The last stitch of each row will be worked into BOTH top loops of the sts, to prevent holes.
  • If needed, place stitch markers into first and last st of the rows, to not lose sts on the sides.
  • Always count the sts and make sure you are working them into the right spot, to not distort the overall pattern!

COLOR CHANGES:

  • Stripe Sequence: you will change colors every 2 rows, alternating 2 rows of A with 2 rows of B.
  • How to change colors from A to B and from B to A: At the end of the 2nd. row of each color stripe made in either yarn color A or B, you will change the color at the last yo-slst-blo stitch of the row, always on the wrong side of the work, this way: yo with working yarn, place the yarn string in the middle, while holding the yo with your thumb, insert hook into both top loops of the last st (from back to front),pick new color yarn, and finish the last yo-slst-blo with new color yarn. Chain 1 with new color yarn, turn and continue working next row with the new color on the right side of work.
  • When you join a new skein of Retro Stripe yarn, keep the color sequence of the stripes.
  • Don’t cut yarn when changing colors, carry the color not in use up from row to row along one side of the blanket. They will be covered with the border.

NOTE: Don’t forget to skip the sts behind the long double crochet stitches!

Row 5 (WS): yo-slst-blo in each st across; changing to B at the last st of row; ch1, turn. (113 sts)

Row 6 (RS): with B ch 1, yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (113 sts)

Row 7 (WS): yo-slst-blo in each st across; changing to A at the last st of row; turn. (113 sts sts)

Row 8 - (long double crochet row on RS): with A ch 1; yo-slst-blo in each of next 2 sts, 1 ldc in next st, *yo-slst-blo in each of next 5 sts, 1 ldc in next st*, repeat from *to* to last 2 sts, work 1 yo-slst-blo in each of last 2 sts of the row; ch1, turn. (113 sts sts)

Row 9 (WS): work as Row 5: yo-slst-blo in each st across; changing to B at the last st of row; ch1, turn. (113 sts) )

Row 10: (RS): work as Row 6: with B ch 1, yo-slst-blo in each st across; ch1, turn. (113 sts)

Row 11 (WS): work as Row 7: yo-slst-blo in each st across; changing to A at the last st of row; turn (113 sts)

Rows 12 - 122: Repeat from Row 2 to Row 11, always alternating the 2 yarns after each 2 rows, ending on WS with a row 9 repeat made with yarn color A! (113 sts)

You should have 31 stripes in yarn color A (White) and 30 stripes in yarn color B (Retro Stripe).

If you have a second skein of yarn color A not in use, do not cut yarn at the end of row 122!
Remove the hook and place a stitch marker into the last stitch, so your work doesn't unravel.

As you can now see, we have 2 rows of yarn color A (White) at the bottom edge of the blanket and 2 rows at the top edge.
If we would now start working the edging around the blanket, that would not make for a perfect symmetry, because the top and bottom edge will always be wider as the sides.
So, I thought about a solution and that was to first work 2 rows (back and forth) with yarn color A along each side and then to continue to work the edging (in the round) around the whole blanket.

Let’s see how to make it!
THE BORDER :
  1. Left Side: Turn the blanket with the wrong side facing up.

Row 1 (WS): Join new skein of yarn color A in the left bottom corner, ch 1 and work up along the side till you reach the left upper corner, working evenly 1 yo-slst in each st, for a total of 122 sts; ch 1, turn. (This is 1 st for each horizontal row! For each color stripe you will place 2 sts on the side edge!)

Row 2 (RS): work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st along the side (122 sts) Cut yarn. Fasten off.

  2. Right Side: Turn the blanket with the wrong side facing up. Pick up the yarn tail color A that you have left at the end of row 122 and continue to work down on the side till you reach the right bottom corner, in the same manner as for the left side.

    Row 1 (WS): ch 1, 1 yo-slst in each st , ch 1, turn ( 122 sts)

Row 2 (RS): work 1 yo-slst-blo in each st along the side (122 sts)

Do not cut yarn!

Now start working the border around the whole blanket!
Continue on the right side, along the top edge:

Round 1 (RS):
Top edge: ch 1, work 2 yo-slsts in the side of the right white border just made, (1 sts for each of the 2 rows), place a stitch marker into first stitch just made at beg of round; then work 1 yo-slsts-blo in each of next 113 sts, work 2 yo-slst in the side of the left white border just made (1 sts for each of the 2 rows).
You will have a total of 117 sts. ( You have added 2 sts on each side of the top edge!)

In the corner stitch place 2 more yo-slsts (inserting hook into both loops) and continue working down on the left side holding the blanket with the right side facing!
Work into 3rd loop at the back of sts -to push the ridge to the front- 1 yo-slst in each st down on the left side till you reach the corner, place 3 sts into corner st (inserting hook into both top loops), then work along the bottom edge inserting the hook into the back loop of sts from foundation chains, 1 yo-slst in each st along the bottom edge till you reach the next corner, place 3 sts into corner (inserting hook into both top loops), then work up along the right side working into 3rd loop at the back of sts 1 yo-slst in each st until you reach the top right corner; place 2 sts into the first marked st at beginning of the round.

TURN and work on the wrong side of the blanket!

Round 2 (WS): ch1, work evenly yo-slst-blo in each st around the blanket, placing 2 sts in each corner st. Cut yarn and fasten off with invisible join. Weave in all ends.

I hope you enjoy the Unicorn Bricks Baby Blanket pattern!
