Mock Cable Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

SIZE: This hat pattern is available in toddler, child and teen/adult women sizes.

HAT CONSTRUCTION:

  • The hat is worked sideways in one piece and then seamed together. The top is then cinched closed.
  • The height of the hat will be determined by the length of the foundation chain and the hat circumference will be given by the number of rows.
  • The slip stitches at the beginning of uneven rows/ at the end of the even rows will form the ribbed brim.

NOTES:

  • Work the slip stitches for the brim a bit taller (a bit loose)
  • At the end of the rows work into both top loops of the sts, for a pretty edge.

GAUGE: 14 sts (worked with the yo-slst) = 10 cm (4 inches)

SUPPLIES:

STITCHES, TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS USED:
- ch: chain

- back bump of chains. Click here for my picture tutorial.

- st: stitch

- slst: slip stitch

- slst blo: slip stitch worked into back loop only

- yo: yarn over hook

- RS: right side of work

- WS: wrong side of work

SPECIAL STITCHES:

  1. Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst):
    Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into 2nd chain from hook; yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain;
(You have now 3 loops on the hook).
Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst)

  2. Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo): work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.

  3. Click here for my PICTURE TUTORIAL for both yo-slst and yo-slst-blo!

  4. Decrease Yarn Over Slip Stitch Back Loops Only (dec yo-slst-blo) : Yo, insert hook into vertical bar of last st one row below, then insert hook into back loop of first of the unworked sts 2 rows below; yo and pull through all 4 loops on the hook.

See how to make it in the pattern below!

  5. Long Double Crochet (ldc): Skip two rows (2 knit look ridges), work 1 dc by inserting hook from bottom to top under the two loops of the yoslst directly below those two skipped rows.
(This will create a mock cable!)
To work the next st after the ldc, skip the st of the current row behind the ldc just made.

Learn how to crochet the long double crochet stitch in my Mock Cables Tutorial! Don't work the long double crochet sts loose! We want accentuated cables when the hat is stretched.

Note: for my head was enough to make 76 rows, ending with a row 4 reapeat, but if you would like the pattern looks continuous all around, you can add 4 rows more, (rows 77-80) ending with a Row 8 repeat (Cable B row)!
Continue with the step below!

All Sizes

Joining the short sides together:
Fasten off. Cut yarn leaving a long tail that will be used to sew the sides together and to close the hole on top of the head.
From bottom to top and with the right sides facing together, hold Row 1 edge on last row edge.
Thread yarn needle with the yarn tail and sew the sides together inserting the needle into the back loop of the side closest to you and into the front loop of the other side.

Closing the hole on top of the hat:
Turn the hat inside out. Thread yarn needle with the long strand of yarn, weave yarn through ridge sts around the top edge stitches at top of hat. Cinch together to close space, and fasten securely more times. Weave in all ends.

Sew a pom pom on top of the hat.

And you're done!

  1. Hello, is row 8 adult and also older child ok? Thanks.

  2. I'm on row 8 for the teen-adult one and I believe there is an error. It says to do 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 5 sts (after the ldc and 5 stitches), but I don't think that's supposed to be there as the total number of stitches for that row is 26. I think it's just supposed to be 1 slst-blo in each of next 6 sts to complete the row. Let me know, thanks very much for this pattern!

  4. Have you ever made this with an open top for a pony tail instead of a pompom
