"Double-layered Stars" Twist Headband / Earwarmer - Free Crochet Pattern

The Double-layered Stars Headband/ Earwarmer is a pretty crochet headband featuring the star stitch and a twist at the front.
The double layer of stitches provides warmth and comfort without using 2 strands of yarn!

This headband is crocheted in the round as a long tube and the short ends are seamed together in a special way to create the twist.
The twist is actually the only (hidden) seam of the headband.

You can wear the headband as you wish, with the twist at the front, at the side or at the back

I really love this crochet twist headband and I hope you will love it as much as I do!

Double layered Stars Twist Headband

It might not be the easiest and fastest headband to crochet, but the results are great: a warm, stretchy, comfy and pretty headband! I really love it and I hope you will love it also!

SIZE:

Teen/ Adult women: approx. 4.33” by 20” ( 11 cm by 50.8 cm)

UPDATE January 2021: Two additional sizes were added: Small Size Child (3-5) and Child Size

You can adjust the size this way: to change the width: work less/more foundation sc sts in an even number

(Multiple of the star stitch in the round is 2!

To make the headband short/longer you can add/subtract rounds.

GAUGE:

8 star stitches x 7 rows = 10cm x 10cm (4" x 4")

THE YARN:

For this headband were used 60g of Red Heart Unforgettable yarn, Echo colorway
, approx. 162 yards. (That's a bit more as half of yarn ball! )

Yarn weight: 4, medium
Ball size: 100 g/3.5 oz, 247 meters/270 yards

Note: This yarn is very pretty and soft, but it is quite hard to unravel and sometimes breacks when unraveled.
If this is your first time learning how to crochet the star stitch, I would suggest using a different yarn to practice the stitch!

first round star stitch

Round 2 (hdc round):

slst to ch1sp of first star, ch 1, work 2 hdc in same ch1sp, 2hdc into ch1sp of each star around; sl st to top of first hdc.

(Total 34 hdc sts for Child and Teen/Adult Women Sizes)
(Total 32 hdc sts for Small Child Size)

hdc round, round two of star stitch

Note: You will need 2 rounds to complete full stars: one round of star stitches and one round of hdc sts.

Next Rounds: Alternate rows 1 and 2 until the tube headband measures approximately 50 cm (19.7 “) long for the adult women size or until the desired length, ending with a star stitch repeat round 1.

I have made 20 rounds with the star stitch for teen/adult women size;
19 rounds with the star stitch for the child size and
18 rounds with the star stitch for the small size size;

Last round: All sizes: slst to ch1sp of first star, ch 1, work 2 sc in same ch1sp, 2sc into ch1sp of each star around; sl st to top of first hdc. (32, 34 sc sts)

This is how the adult size it will look now:

wdouble layered headband tube

Cut yarn leaving a long tail that will be used to sew the short ends together. Fasten off.

Sewing the Headband with the Twist :

  1. Paying attention that the joining seam is in the middle of the tube, lay the crochet piece flat with the RS facing ( the joining seam will be on the WS).
  2. Bring short ends to the middle. (Now you'll be working on the wrong side of the crochet piece)
  3. Fold both ends in half and
  4. "sandwich" the 4 layers together as seen in the picture collage below.
  5. Thread the yarn end and sew along the edge going through all 4 double layers.

Note: ( to make it easier with the double layers, you can take an extra step to first sew or slst the double layers together at each end of the headband.)
Turn and sew once more to secure.

Cut yarn. Fasten off. Turn the headband to the right side.
And you're done!
