Fisherman's Rib Crochet Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

Do you love knit-look crochet hats as much as I do? Then this unisex crochet ribbed hat is just what you’re looking for!

It's a perfect knit-look crochet hat, stretchy and warm, featuring a crochet stitch pattern that resembles the knit Fisherman’s Rib stitch pattern.

You can add a faux fur pompom for a more feminin look!

This ribbed crochet hat pattern is a longer (folded-over) version of my Side2Side Hat that I published a few years ago.

Depending on your own preferences, you can wear it as a slouch hat or with the cuff folded over. I love it both ways!
Here's a close up of the folded cuff style.

And here's a close up of the slouchy style knit-look crochet hat:

Hat construction

The hat is worked sideways in rows, back and forth, then seamed together at the back with an invisible seam. The top of the hat is then cinched together.

GAUGE

16 yoslst = 10 cm (4”)

SIZE

one size adult medium-large
The hat fits my husband's head, but it looks great on me too! :)

Hat height: 28 cm (approx 11 inches) without folding the cuff over

You can easily adjust the width of the hat by working less/more rows as in the pattern indicated.
For a shorter/longer hat, you will need to chain less/more foundation chain stitches and then start row 1 as indicated in the pattern, but with less/more yo-slsts at the end of the row.

The height of the hat will be determined by the length of the foundation chain and the hat circumference will be given by the number of rows.

The piece has a lot of stretch. Depending on your own work tension, you might need to crochet more/ fewer rows as in the pattern indicated.

For best results, please try it on the recipient's head. If it is too wide, before closing the top, you can still unravel a few rows; if it is too tight, you can work some additional rows.

THE YARN:

For this hat was used Happy Sheep-Babywool yarn from Hobbii ; in colorway Navy Blue
This is a 4 ply superfine yarn made from 100% merino wool, machine washable.
You will use 2 strands of yarn held together!!
Ball Weight: 50 g (1.75 oz)
Length ca. 165 m (180 yds)

For the hat I have used 110 g of yarn, so you will need just a bit more than 2 balls of yarn.

OTHER SUPPLIES:

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

- ch: chain
- back bump of chains. Click here for my tutorial. - slst : slip stitch
- slst blo: slip stitch back loop only
- sc: single crochet
- sc blo: single crochet back loop only
- st: stitch
- RS: right side
- WS: wrong side

Special Stitches:

  1. Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst): Yarn over (yo) and insert the hook into indicated st; yarn over and draw the yarn through. (You have now 3 loops on the hook). Having the 3 loops on hook, pull/slip the first loop on hook through the next 2 loops on hook to complete a Yarn Over Slip Stitch (yo-slst).
  2. Click here for my TUTORIAL!
  3. Yarn over slip stitch back loops only (yo-slst-blo): work the stitch as described above, but inserting the hook only into the back loops of the stitches.

NOTES

  1. the ch1 at beginning of the rows will not count as a st
  2. Always count your stitches! Be carefull not to lose the sts at the end of the rows! You might like to use sts markers into first st and last st of the rows!
  3. The stitch pattern is reversible, the only difference is that on one side the knit-look V’s are upside down. (I use that as the wrong side).
  4. HAT INSTRUCTIONS

Note: At the end of the post you can watch a short video I posted on Youtube showing how to make this hat With 2 strands of yarn held together and a 5.5mm crochet hook chain 46.

Row 1 (WS): slst in 2nd ch from hook and 1 slst in next ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 yo-slst in each of next 40 ch; ch1, turn (45 sts)

Row 2 (RS): yo-slst-blo in each of next 40 sts, 1 sc-blo in each of next 3 sts, 1 slst-blo in each of next 2 sts; ch1, turn (45 sts)

Row 3 (WS): 1 slst-blo in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc-blo in each of next 3 sts, 1 yo-slst-blo in each of next 39 sts, 1 yo-slst in both top loops of last st; ch1, turn. (45 sts)

(Note: the last yo-slst of the row will be worked inserting the hook under both top loops of the last st of previous row. This will prevent having holes on the edge.)

Rows 4-69: repeat as rows 2-3 ending on WS with a row 3 repeat.

Cut yarn leaving a very long tail that will be used to sew the sides together. Fasten off.
This is how your piece will look like after finishing last row:

crochet hat worked sideways in rows

The narrower part made with slip stitches will form the top of the hat!

    Joining the sides:

Fold the ends together with the right sides facing each other (to sew on WS).
You can either slip stitch the sides together, or you can sew them together from bottom to the top of the hat.
    I prefer sewing them together (on WS) because the seam it is almost invisible this way;
How to sew the seam: sew the two ends together inserting the yarn needle through the back loops of the sts on each side, back and forth (as shown in the picture below) until you reach the top.

sewing the sides of crochet hat together

Fasten off. Do not cut yarn. Continue with the step below.

Closing the hole on top of the hat:

Having the hat inside out weave yarn through slip stitches at the top of the hat. Cinch together to close space, and fasten securely more times. Weave in all ends.
    And you're done!

  2. This is probably a dumb question but I'm going to ask anyway 😁! Would The Fisherman's Ribbed Hat work using 4 ply worsted weight yarn?

    1. Sure, you can use worsted weight yarn. Please check your gauge.

  4. Will this work for leftie as my right side is your wrong side? Also how long is the starting 45 stitches in inches or cm. Tx in advance

    1. Hi, the pattern is reversible, I don't see any problem for a leftie. You should only measure after making more rows, because the piece it will shrink due to the shorter stitches on the top end. As written in the pattern above, the piece should be 11 inches high.

  5. Hi there. I’m in the middle of this pattern. I’m loving it. However I’m curious how wide the flat part (before sewing it together) should be. How many inches to the hat be in width not height.

    1. Hi, the beauty of this kind of side worked hats, is that the width can be totally adjusted to fit the head of the future owner. Take a measuring tape and stretch the crocheted piece out. For an adult woman size the stretched piece should be about 22 inches before joining the sides together.

  6. Hi, I think this pattern is super cute! However I'm having a tough time with the number of stitches. I've tried a couple different things but always end up with the wrong number of stitches in a row.

  7. Unique easy pattern. Thank you.

  8. Hello! I was just wondering if this tutorial would work using 2 different colours of yarn to get an accented effect?
