"Fluffy Bear" Baby Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

The Fluffy Bear Baby Hat is a free crochet baby hat pattern that you can find here on My Hobby is Crochet blog!

This crochet baby hat with bear ears is perfect for photo props, but not only.
Here’s my cute little nephew modeling the hat I have designed for him. So adorable!

*Disclaimer: This post includes affiliate links and at no additional cost to you, I might earn a small commission if you decide to purchase through these links. Thank you!

For this crochet baby hat pattern I have used a super soft fluffy yarn of the German yarn brand Schachenmayr called Baby Smiles Lenja Soft.

This yarn is ideal for delicate baby skin, it keeps wonderfully warm, it is free of harmful substances and it is easy to care for.

If you can not find this yarn where you live, you could try to substitute it with other fleece style yarns such as:
ABC YARN Super Squishy DK,
RICO DESIGN Baby Teddy Aran,
SCHEEPJES Sweetheart Soft.
For more yarn substitutions check out the Yarnsub site.

If you have never worked with this kind of fluffy yarns before, it might take a while to get used to. At first the stitches might be difficult to see and you will need a bit of practice to “feel” instead of seeing your stitches.

After a few rounds with the front and back post double crochet stitches, the ribbing will form and you will easily know how to place your stitches.

The Hat is worked from the bottom up in joined rounds; the top of the hat will be shaped with a few decrease rounds, then cinched together to close the hole on top.

NOTES:

  1. For a better elasticity at the bottom, the hat is started with a row of foundation single crochet stitches (fsc) instead of chain sts.
  2. The ch2 at beg of rounds will not count as a st
  3. At the end of each round you will slst into the first back post dc stitch at the beg of the round and not into the ch2.

Start with 40 fsc, join into round with slst to top of 1st fsc. (40 sts)

Round 1: ch2, *work 1 fpdc around each of next 2 sts, 1 bpdc around each of next 2 sts*, repeat from *to* around, join with slst to top of the first fpdc. (40 sts)

Rounds 2- 11: Repeat as round 1.
When the piece measures approx. 10 cm (4") in height, start decreasing to shape the top of the hat.

Round 12: ch2, *work 1 fpdc around each of next 2 fpdc, dec-bpdc*, repeat from *to* around, join with slst to top of the first fpdc. (30 sts)

Round 13: ch2, *dec-fpdc, work 1 bpdc around next bpdc*, repeat from *to* around, join with slst to top of the first fpdc. (20 sts)

Round 14: ch2, dec-fpdc each next 2 sts. (10 sts)

Cut yarn leaving a long tail that will be used to close the hole on top of the hat.

Closing the hole on top of the hat

Having the hat inside out weave yarn through slip stitches at the top of the hat. Cinch together to close space, and fasten securely more times. Weave in all ends.

Bear Ears: (Make two!)

Start with a magic ring.

Row 1: Chain 1, work 10 hdc into ring. (10 sts)
Close the magic ring by pulling the yarn tail tight.
DO NOT join into ring with slst! You will not work in the round, but in rows!
Ch1 and TURN!

Row 2: work 1 hdc in first st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st*, repeat from *to* till end of the row.
Cut yarn leaving a long tail that will be used to sew the ears. Fasten off.

Shaping the ears:
Knot the two yarn tails together (from the beginning and from the end of the project) to shape the ear, then insert hook into the 1st. st at beg of row and pull the yarn tail through.

This is how it will look before sewing the ears onto hat:

Sew on Ears:
Lay the hat flat with the joining seam at middle back.
Pin the ears to either side along the fold just below the decrease rows (made for the top of the hat) leaving 4 pairs of fpdc ribs in between the two ears.
Thread yarn needle with the long tail you left and sew ears to hat.
Cut yarn and weave in all ends. And you are done!
