Wheat Scarf - Free Crochet Pattern

The Wheat Scarf is a beautiful crochet scarf featuring an interesting pattern with crossed-over cable stitches, that works up pretty fast.

Although it looks complicated, the pattern is quite easy and repetitive, alternating 2 rows of half double crochet (hdc) stitches with 2 rows of crossed-over cable stitches.

The scarf is worked lengthwise in rows back and forth, that means that the foundation stitches will determine how long the scarf will be.

A great advantage of working scarves in rows on the length is that you will not have to turn your work hundreds of times; after a few rows you are done.

I have preferred starting my scarf with chainless foundation half double crochet stitches (Fhdc), but if you like, you can start with foundation chains and then work one row with the hdc, as written for the alternative version.

I do recommend learning how to crochet the Fhdc; once you learned it, you will never go back working into hundreds of chains! You are not limited by a number of chains … you can add more/less Fhdc stitches to your liking, as you go.

For a nice drape, I have used a larger hook size as the one recommended on the yarn label (instead of the recommended 5 mm, I have used a 6mm crochet hook).

SIZE

Without the fringe, the scarf is approx. 68” (173 cm) long and 8.5” (21cm) wide.
You can easily adjust the size of your scarf!
- For a shorter or longer scarf start with less or more foundation half double crochet stitches in a multiple of 4.
(ALTERNATIVE if you start with foundation chain sts: add less/more chains in a multiple of 4 +2 for turning chain)
- For a narrower or wider scarf add less or more rows in the pattern repeat.

GAUGE

12 sts and 7 rows in pattern repeat = 10 cm x 10 cm (4” x 4")

SUPPLIES:

• 300 g of aran, medium weight yarn.
  I have used 3 skeins of Red Heart Soft, in Wheat colorway
• Crochet Hook: 6 mm Furls Wooden Hook
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors
• optional 2 stitch markers
Note: If you like, use 2 stitch markers, one in the first stitch and 1 in the last stitch of a row to not loose the stitches on the edges!
Move the stitch markers as you go.

STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

- ch: chain
- back bump of chains. Click here for my tutorial.
- st: stitch
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- RS: right side of work
- WS: wrong side of work
- * to * : repeat the sequence of stitches between the stars
- sk: skip
- beg: beginning
- Fhdc: foundation half double crochet
- csdc = Chainless Starting Double Crochet: it will replace the starting ch 3 at beginning of braiding rows. This stitch prevents the gapes on the edge that are typical when using the ch3 at the beginning of rows.

Special Stitches:

Cross-over Cable Stitch: skip next st, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts. Working over the 3 dc’s just made, yarn over and insert hook into skipped st.
Pull up a loop to the height of the dc’s, yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on the hook, yo and pull though the next 2 loops on hook to complete a long double crochet (Ldc)!
The 4 sts made will create a cross-over cable.

NOTES

• The ch2 at the beginning of the hdc rows will not count as a stitch and you will not work into it.
• The ch3 (or alternative the csdc) will count as a dc and you will work into the top of the ch3/ csdc.
• Always pay attention to your stitches, count your stitches and make sure you do not misplace them!

INSTRUCTIONS

Row 1 (WS): With hook size 6 mm work 226 Fhdc, turn.

Alternativ if you do not like to use the foundation half double crochet:

Alternative Row 1 (WS): chain 228.
Inserting hook into back bumps of chains work 1 hdc into 3nd ch from hook and 1 hdc in each ch across; turn. (226 sts total; the ch2 will not count as a st)

Row 2 (RS): ch 2 (does not count as a st), work 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each st across, turn.

Row 3 (WS): ch 3 or csdc (will count as first dc), 1 dc in each of next 2 hdc,
*sk next st, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 Ldc back into skipped st working over the 3 dc’s just made*,
repeat the cross-over cable sts from * to* across the row till the last 3 sts, ending the row with 1 dc into each of the last 3 sts.
(You will have 48 cross-over cables total between 3 sts at the beginning and 3 dc sts at the end of the row.)

Row 4 (RS): ch 3 or csdc (will count as first dc), 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, work cross-over cable sts across the row till the last 3 sts, ending the row with 1 dc into each of the last 3 sts.
If you work correctly, the crossed- over stitches from this row should align with the crossed-over stitches from the previous row,as seen in the picture below!

Here is how the piece should look at the end of row 4:

Rows 5 and 6: ch2 (does not count as a st), work 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each st across, turn.

Next rows: Repeat the sequence from row 3 to row 6, three times more, but at the last repeat sequence stop after the first hdc row; instead of a second hdc row, work a row with sc in each st across, as written below.

Last row: ch1 (does not count as a st), sc in 1st st and sc in each hdc across.
Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Add fringe to the scarf

Cut 60 strands of yarn (30 for each scarf end), 15" (38 cm) long. Taking 3 strands together, knot into fringe evenly across each end of scarf. Trim fringe evenly.
I recommend putting a fringe in the first st on the short edge, skipping one row and then placing fringe in every other row end across (10 fringe in total).
